(Slight hijack) Channel 13 is the worst for cutting out commercials. Lots and lots of ads. I’d guess that they cut out a lot more than a few minutes. And isn’t it true that back when the first series was made, the episodes were longer because they had shorter commercial breaks? I’m not 100% sure about that, but it seems like it’s something I’ve always assumed.
All I know is that the few times I’ve seen uncut versions of Star Trek, I saw a whole lot of stuff I’d never seen before. (I’m pretty sure I starting watching the show when it was on Channel 13.)
It’s not just that channel, or just Star Trek for that matter (in whichever incarnation). It’s pretty much SOP for them to cut out a large chunk of TV shows when they go to syndication (because there weren’t nearly enough commercials the first time around). That’s why Spike TV is making such a big deal about showing uncut Next Generation episodes on Friday nights (Yes, I know that TNG & DS9 were syndicated originally, but first run syndicacation is a different animal).
You realize, of course, that this means I must now get the DVD of “And the Children Shall Lead” so that I can verify Aesiron’s story. (And get the exact miles-per-hour figure.)
I’ll also be looking out for those “warp-cutting warp engines” …
I’m pretty sure that the Encyclopedia is canon until proven otherwise and I believe that certain TNG shuttles were capable of warp… I know they had the nacelles, Bussard Ramscoops and all.
I picked up the DVD of “And the Children Shall Lead” at Fry’s Electronics on my way home tonight. (Like all ST:TOS DVDs, it contained two episodes – in this case, the other episode was “The Enterprise Incident.”)
I watched the complete, unedited, uncut version of “And the Children Shall Lead” on the DVD all the way from beginning to end.
The good news is, yosemitebabe is right about channel 13 cutting out a lot of stuff so that they can cram in more commercials. There was an entire sequence with Kirk and Spock in a cave on Triacus which was on the DVD but had been completely missing from my taped-off-the-air copy, for example.
The bad news is, even with every precious second of footage in that episode intact, there was still no mention of any speed, in miles per hour or otherwise. (Nor were there any warp-cutting warp engines.)
So, Aesiron, it looks like that miles-per-hour quote you remember so fondly either doesn’t exist, or was from another episode entirely. Do you have another episode title that you think it might have been in, by any chance?
Oh, crap… that’s right. It was in a Voyager S4 episode Message in a Bottle. And it wasn’t Spock that said it, it was Tuvok. You know how all them Vulcans look alike.
Totally off topic, is it just me or does this look like Quantum Borg"
Upon reading this, I sifted through my off-the-air tapes of ST:Voyager, found “Message in a Bottle,” and watched through the whole damn thing to find that reference to miles-per-hour you mentioned.
Not only was there no reference to miles per hour (or kilometers per hour, or any speed other than “Warp 9.9”), Tuvok wasn’t even in this epsiode!
(Liked seeing the EMH-2 again, though. And the first appearance of the Hirojen. And that starship that split into 3 pieces. It’d been a while since I’d seen this episode.)
It’s so sooooooooooo sweet that I want to crap my pants. I can’t believe it sometimes, but I feel it inside my heart. It’s so totally awesome and that’s a fact. It’s fast, smooth, cool, strong, powerful, and sweet. I can’t wait to see it again. I love the Prometheus with all of my body (including my pee pee).
That’s nice. But before you and the Prometheus go and get a motel room, can you tell me which episode of which series did have the line about a specific number of miles per hour that the ship was travelling? 'Cause it obviously wasn’t “Message in a Bottle” either.
It must have been a special Southeast version of Voyager or somethin’. **Cplant ** may have seen it if he still got domestic feed back then instead of that funky furriner feed he gets now. He should be able to back me up.
He stopped pulling your leg some time back. When he ripped it off. He’s been beating you over the head with it for the last little bit.
But I think, just to be on the safe side, that you need to just pick up all of the DVD collections (what’s been released, at least). You can be our official episode fact checker.
Given the recent severed leg beating, I therefore stand fast by my statement that “Broken Arrow” (ENT pilot) was the only time that any Trek character quoted a faster-than-light speed in units other than Warp Factor.
Hm. “Pathways” and “Mosaic”, two Voyager books written by Jeri Taylor (who created Voyager with Rick Berman and Michael Piller), are canon and one of the characters might have quoted (you didn’t say said) warp speed in kmh or mph in those.
Since you’re all about double checking the facts, I’d suggest you visit the library post-haste.
