right, I watched Enterprise yesterday afternoon, the episode “Regeneration”, where they find the remnants of the Borg Sphere from First Contact in the Artic.
The Borg regenerate, assimilate a research team and their transport and head off back to Borg space, to get more of them to invade etc.
So, how does this make sense that the Enterprise of TNG knew nothing of the Borg, yet StarFleets already encountered them? Why would they keep this a secret, or classified or whatever? surely, when T’pol mentions they’ve got about 200 years before the Borg transmission reaches the Delta quadrant, they’d brief everyone and prepare, so that they can kick the Borg’s arses when they get to Earth space.
Can the Trekheads help me out here? Spoilers are most welcome.
cheers.
First Contact, although it basically restored the timeline, caused a few changes. One is the design of the NX-01, which probably was inspired by ZC’s glimpse of the E-E.
(Was going to explain it myself, but the Star Trek Hypertext has a much clearer one, so I’ll just cut and paste:
So, then, how to account for the fact that these unknown alien aggressors will still be unknown in the 24th century when they begin their invasion against the Federation? I have an explanation. It’s quite simple, really: When the TNG crew first encountered the Borg in “Q Who,” that was before they followed the Borg sphere back in time to Earth and destroyed it, a full century before its wreckage would be found in the Arctic Circle. So, you see, none of this had happened yet when the TNG crew first encountered the Borg. Of course they wouldn’t have heard the stories of a possible invasion of cybernetic beings. Those stories didn’t exist. Yet.
Smile, wink, nod.)
Another way out: The Borg were just a minor event to Archer and crew. And the Xindi quickly overshadowed them. Perhaps the records of the Borg encounter were destoyed in the Florida attack.
Plus, I don’t recall that they were identified as “Borg” in the ENT ep. Will have to review the thread to make sure.
So, even without the timeline alteration theories concerning FC and ENT, you can explain it away.
