Entertainer most inversely hated by the general populace as they are liked by their cohorts.

Absolutely!!

I think he’s the best, drawing the line from Eddie Lang, to Django, to Les Paul, who thought Jeff was the best and had Beck induct him into the RRHoFame.

But yes, he’s a guitarist’s guitarist and many folks at this point aren’t aware of him (or Eddie Lang, or Django, etc…)

That was a character. He doesn’t even know how to do the voice anymore. He mostly directs indies now. And yes his work is well respected.

Though, I’d wager you that 90% of people who even know who he is, would only really know him for his work using that character / voice.

“I hate ferris wheels!!”

I heard about an incident that occurred during Kaufman’s time on Taxi. He’d arranged for his alter ego, Tony Clifton, to appear in an episode. As I heard it, he showed up late and was generally a complete boorish asshole, got his costars pissed at him, and was fired. Then Kaufman showed up for the next episode as if nothing had happened. One source I checked just now claims that the whole Clifton thing was staged. Hard to know for sure what happened, but the admiration for Kaufman seems to come from other comics who respected him, bot not necessarily from those who worked with him.

I think his biggest joke was that he wasn’t in the Clifton suit some of the time. He wanted people to believe he was in there the whole time, but his personal practical joke is that sometimes, it was his friend, Bob Zmuda.

Wouldn’t say I’m a Fallon hater but I do find him annoying most of the time.
-He seems to think he’s pretty hilarious.
-His breaking character on SNL always felt fake to me but people loved it and he made it part of his schtick.
-I think other celebs like him because he constantly strokes their egos, like non-stop. Make me want to gag.
-He’ll never let a guest do a comedy sketch/skit unless he can insert himself in it also.

And today you have Roman Reigns and the fleeting John Cena. Supposedly faces, but super hated by what seems to be a large segment of the crowd.

He’s hated by the “too cool for school” types that just like to jump on the hate bandwagon for no real reason. I’d bet 90% of the people hating on, say, Jack & Jill, never even saw it. It’s a good turn off your brain comedy.

As for “insiders” he has a lot of friends and supposedly treats them very well, really spreads the wealth and such.

Even before his sexual harassment claims were made public, I never got the impression Weinstein was well-liked in Hollywood. From the stories I read about him, he was someone you best dealt with only if you had to and if you had to deal with him, you did so gingerly. On the other hand, was he feared? Definitely (especially if you were an actress).

The mention of Weinstein reminded me of this one: somehow, Roman Polanski apparently still has a lot of defenders in the movie industry.

I’ve never heard of Bieber being a nice guy in person – quite the opposite.

I think that makes the two the opposite of this thread – it’s about celebs who AREN’T popular, but are actually very nice individuals.

If a celeb is adored by the public and hated by their cohorts, that meets the OP’s criteria of an inverse relationship.
