Entertainers on steroids? Why? And who cares?

So, reports say that Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean and Tyler Perry may have received/used performance enhancing drugs.

CNN Article

I can perhaps relate to the fact that a touring performer having to play/sing/dance/act enthusiatically night after night can be taxing, but geez, is it really THAT hard? My NSHO is that if you’re already engaged in other forms of cheating (sampling, lip-synching), that it’s no real stretch to engage in others.

Then again, while performance-enhancing drugs can alter the outcome of supposedly fair contests, and that can mean a big deal (in Vegas, as well as the whole integrity of the game thing), I don’t see how this can be reported as being significant with a straight face.

So, what AM I supposed to think about this? (Other than I’m shocked that Carrot Top wasn’t named)

Fiddy on steroids? You mean it’s not possible to achieve that rippling mass of muscle through natural means? I’m shocked and appalled. Shocked, I tell you.

/sarcasm

I have to admit I’m somewhat surprised to see Mary J Blige on the list, though. She never struck me as visibly muscular in the usual stereotypical 'roid way.

This doesn’t suprise me as celebrities are known for overindulging in many areas. I don’t care too much other than these drugs are very bad for you, and kids look to celebrities as role models. Also if the public is against people abusing these kinds of drugs, the celebrity’s popularity may suffer.

It’s supposed to be an anti-aging thing, thus, e.g., Mary J. Blige.

right - 50cents as a role model - not that he couldn’t be, or shouldn’t be - but if, until this report, no one KNEW of his steroid usage, how is his ‘role model’ status hurt? How is the usage of Steroids going to change now that we ‘know’ he might have used them?

Non News in the current witch hunt of people who might do things that others might not consider appropriate.

Don’t care. None of my business. take what you want.

on edit - what I’m trying to say is that no one knew these folks may/may not have been using steroids - therefore the “kids might because these role models might” argument falls flat - now that the kids “know”, then sure - but until now - notsomuch.

This is just part of the natural story arc of 50’s career. He will get some heat for this, then in a while come clean and reinvent himself with a name change from Fiddy Cent to Fo’ Bits. That way, when he has to take somebody out, he can write them a FoBituary.

Of course, I didn’t realize until after I posted that every one of the named entertainers is black. Not sure if that is a factor or not…

Athletes taking steroids is cheating. Musicians taking steroids is kind of stupid, but otherwise, who cares?

They’re not underage and they’re not using it to cheat in a competition so if they want to destroy their bodies due to narcissism then be my guest.

Since they weren’t advertising the fact they were abusers, I kinda question the resultant damage CNN might be doing by advertising the fact. Making known this was the mechanism responsible benefits those that might idolize these individuals how exactly?

“Come on Timbaland, all the producers are doing it! You’ll come up with some sick beats on this stuff!” :smack:

Who cares.

Considering the artists named, I would think that “performance enhancing” drugs would be more beneficial if taken by their audiences, rather than the artists themselves.

Huh? Because these performers are bad? Surely that’s not what you meant.

The only reason to care is that it is against the law. Steroids are controlled substances; you have to have a valid prescription for them, as well as a valid medical reason to possess them. Since the only indication for steroids is hypogonadism, it’s unlikely that Mary J. Blige had a valid reason to have the drugs.

The idea that any of these clowns could be considered a “role model” is hilarious…

If proven true, will they have to give back any of their gold records?

Here’s an interesting link about celebs on 'roids. Some of them are even white. I mean, they don’t come much wider than Carrot-Top.

And yes, I know it’s a joke article, and I probably should have written "Celebs who are rumored to be on 'roids. It’s late, and I spent most of the evening shovelling snow.

Ever seen 300?

…just sayin’

I don’t much care if actors and musicians do it. Every time I watch one of those talk shows with an actor who added 40lbs of muscle for a role and swears he just ate right and had a trainer, I laugh. It simply isn’t possible in the time frame the actor/tress invariable gives.

The only thing that annoys me is when obvious steroid use is denied. It feeds the lie that it is possible to look like Arnold if you simply eat right and exercise. It requires copious amounts of gear and genetics.

edit: I know Arnold has, sort of, admitted it but as far as I know he basically said that he only used while cutting and he rarely talks about it. He’s just the biggest body I could think of off of the top of my head.
