“No, mean is when I made Amy Mancini ride her bike home after I ass-fucked her.”
The whole Craig’s list scene.
Turtle falling off the couch in the bunny suit.
And, then, in the midst of the madness, they throw in that totally believable touching scene with Ari and his son. And, they’ve been able to keep the industry drama at a healthy simmer forever.
Ari’s happy-dance after convincing Homer Simpson (yes, that’s Homer Simpson) was great.
Right now, this show is as good as I’ve ever seen a half-hour comedy. Every single character is unique, distinct, developed. Even the bit parts get great lines. The guy who plays Vinnie has really impressed me acting-wise this season. . .he’s always the calm in the face of the storm.
The episode this year with the mayor and the transvestite (and the subsequent reveal on TMZ) was absolutely classic.
Tonight’s episode was probably my favorite this whole season. I was wondering if they were gonna deal with Sloan and Eric’s breakup at any point. It seemed strange that they ignored it for so long, especially since E’s such an apparent romantic.
Furry Turtle was hysterical.
Does anybody know what that song was that played over the credits?
I really like this show…a lot. But I don’t find myself being as completely blown away by it as I see some other folks do. I get annoyed by most of the characters, from E to Ari. Usually something neat and/or amusing happens and I admit the writing is amazing - enough to make me tune in each week - but still I spend a lot of time cringing. I liked Ari’s story in this last episode but a lot of the other parts made me a little crabby.
Do you think maybe this is a male-oriented show that females (like myself) can also enjoy, because of the good writing? Or am I just plain too uptight?
I really like the show but since I don’t have HBO, I rely largely on YouTube for the recent episodes (though, obviously, I only get to see them in nuggets). There are plenty of back eps I haven’t seen either (except, again, in parts), but I figure I’ll catch up eventually.
Congrats to Kevin Dillon for his Emmy nod! As great as Piven is, Johnny Drama is my favorite character.
It’s a lot of dick jokes, and some of the humor comes from male aggressiveness and selfishness. And, there’s a lot of T and A.
Definitely more male-oriented, but the writing is sharp. It’s detailed. The humor comes from the the definition of the characters. . .they’re not just vehicle for jokes.
I think it can make you cringe because all of the characters want to act in their own self-interest which is always at cross purposes with the self-interest of the others. There is always tension – it’s almost the defining characteristic of the humor. They always dig in so deeply that it’s a huge ego concession when they have to cooperate.
What’s funny is that while E and Ari or E and Billy or Drama and Turtle are always butting heads, Vinnie just lets it all spin around him, and everything always works out for his benefit.
I’m actually not a huge fan of Vince’s. I find him too smug. Everyone is always dancing around to please him and he gets stubborn and messes stuff up. My favorite character is Lloyd.
I think I am definitely too uptight But I do like the show. And I ALMOST agree with Marconi & Schmeese, except there’s this little show called Weeds…
I like to watch it when I need to turn my brain off. Not when I want to enjoy great (or even decent) writing or acting (though Adrian Grenier’s pretty much playing himself). Good god those cameos are painful, worse than when Olympic medalists used to show up on TGIF. Ari and Lloyd are great, though.
I generally enjoy this show but every now and then there’s an episode that just doesn’t gel for me. Recently it was the one with Vinnie at Dennis Hopper’s. Sunday night’s was just so-so IMHO. It was almost a one-off as there was no mention of the whole Medellin brewhaha, but the Ari kid/school storyline kept it in check. And any episode with Sloan is a good one.
I really think the show’s about Eric, and Vinnie is just the vehicle for it. Eric is the only one of the four of them with any kind of growth arc; Drama has an arc but he really doesn’t get anywhere with it, just goes up and down.
Jeremy Piven is overall probably the best actor on the show, Kevin Dillon’s Emmy nom notwithstanding.
Overall, my Sunday night appointment TV. (Can’t wait for Weeds to start again!)
Even funnier was just prior to that with him with folded hands as he said to E, “Please tell me you f***ed her” (so he wouldn’t have to “boink” the Craigslist hookup). And then E said, “You’re helping Bugs Bunny thread his dick through a hole and I’m the whackjob.”
And yes, Ari with his son was hilarious. He seemed to have it together until the kid said, “I really, really want to go to school with my friend” and tears appeared in his eyes. Ari’s great because I can count on him to say something totally un-PC at every oppportunity, but then he’s really loyal to Lloyd.
And by the way, in a great scene in the penultimate episode of the second season, Lloyd mentioned how he graduated at the top of his class at Stanford Business School but was working as Ari’s assistant for the opportunity. I was surprised that Lloyd was so overqualified, and am waiting for him to move on from just being the assistant, although I don’t know if I can see him as an agent, as he doesn’t seem to have the right personality.
I love the show but I’m at a point where I wish the writers could do a huge twist and get rid of E, that character or the actor portraying that character really drags things down. Ideally he and Vince would slip farther into the background and let Johnny, Turtle, Ari, Ari’s smoking hot wife and my man Lloyd get more face-time.
This past episode was my favorite this year, it had four or five laugh-out-loud moments, I was dying at the end when Turtle looked through the window. Of course, Turtle and Drama have been my faves for a long while, since this exchange:
Johnny Drama: If you play gay or retarded you get an Oscar. I’d take in the ass for an Oscar.
Turtle: You’d take in the ass for a guest spot on The Hughleys.
Damn… I can’t really read this thread because I’m not entirely caught up, but I watched an Entourage marathon a month ago and I’ve been addicted ever since. The last episode I watched, they found out Medellin got into Cannes.
Reading some of the other SDMB threads, I can’t believe people are saying Kevin Connolly is a bad actor. He’s my favorite actor and character on the show. On the other hand, Vince doesn’t seem to do a lot besides find random hotties, and Adrian Grenier isn’t convincing doing that.
Vince is easily my least favorite part of the whole show. He’s a smug, selfish, ungrateful jerk who’d be waiting tables somewhere if it weren’t for E. This is to say nothing of him not being interesting in the slightest. I’d be more than happy if he just became a background non-character around which the other, better characters existed.
I was sort of disappointed in the last season. I hate the Billy Walsh character and didn’t need a total retread of the “he and E hate each other” thing. The Ari and Lloyd stuff was gold, of course, as is everything involving Ari’s wife.
That said, I was very glad that the movie they made this season really was horrible.
