I have made it a point to ween myself off the dreaded aspertame. I have not consumed any in several weeks now. This decision was prompted by some things I heard on the radio and some things I read here.
I feel a little better. Not much. But here’s the thing. I don’t drink diet coke, which I really miss, but I drink iced tea and I put sweet & low in it. So I’ve trade aspertame for saccarin(sp?).
Have I gained, lost, or maintained the status quo, health-wise?
As my Pops used to say “Unless you’re an Astronaut you aren’t getting off this planet alive.”
Lets admit…If the air we breathe dosn’t kill us we will do our damnest to kill ourselves. Well, on that thought, pass the iced tea and the Equal. I’m going to enjoy myself whilst I’m on this planet.
I’ve never used Splenda on its own (I don’t drink coffee or tea that would require packets of sweetner), but I’ve used products that have it in it, like Diet V8 Splash.
I’m also considering it for use in baking, but haven’t yet. Of course, I haven’t baked recently, which might be why…
And if Nutra Sweet’s going to kill me, well, at least I’ll kick the bucket with a smile on my face and Diet Coke in my veins.
[Eve, standing in front of office coffee machine, mulling things over]: “Hmmm . . . Pink cancer-dust or blue cancer-dust?”
One thing I have leanred is, never inhale just as you pour the cancer-dust into your coffee. There is a brief “puff” of cancer-dust that wafts upwards, and if you inhale it . . . well, it is not pleasant.
I happen to live with a diabetic. Angie only found out a couple of weeks ago from a blood test that was done back in March. Yes, it took three months for the doctor to finally tell her; he basically said it slipped his mind. We’ve been finding new ways to avoid the dreaded white stuff and chose Splenda for our iced tea.
BTW: the reason we chose Splenda has nothing to do with the rumored side effects of aspartame or saccharine. I hate the way they taste and figured that any other artificial sweetener had to be better.
my boss had some packets of splenda. I avoided them like the plague under the assumption they would taste horrid.
:surprise:
it’s actually tasty!
what are the chances of seeing it at a restaurant though?
I can tolerate Equal, but not sweet n’ low.
Sweet n’low is so vile and bitter, I am amazed anyone likes it.
One more Splenda vote.
It is more expensive by volume, especially to cook with, but worth it, in my opinion.
Studies done…? Bah. Personal experiences for the two of us show several problems with the pink and blue stuff, but none known of yet, with the yellow stuff.
Diet Rite, Diet RC, and one brand of generic diet soda available at dollar stores here, all contain Splenda. That’s about it.
Snopes has a very good page on the aspartame controversy with links to relevant articles.
I use the little pink packets exclusively when I’m adding my own sweetener, but the 6-8 diet Snapples I drink every day give me more than my RDA of aspartame.
