Equalities minister is sexist, homophobic

Of course back then she was only Minister for Women.

I wasn’t aware of a stereotype of men being in favor of SSM, but if it exists, I’m kind of okay with it.

The minister sounds like a real shit, though, regardless.

Clarifications:

  1. Nicky Morgan is female.
  2. She is a minister in the sense that she is a member of the British Government. She is not a religious cleric.
  3. She is the Minister for Women and Equlaities and also the Education Secretary. They are two separate offices.
  4. The “he” in that quoted sentence refers to the constiuent, Gary Chadwick, who wrote asking how she, Nicky Morgan, could fulfill her duties as minister of Equalities and Women since she was on record as being against gay marriage, which means that she is not fully supporting the rights of all women.
  5. She, Morgan, told he, Chadwick, that his question was “… typical from a man so I suggest you watch what I do in the role and you will see for yourself.”, which, to me, most strongly implies that she didn’t actually read his email, but I dont’ know.
  6. No, I don’t know what a Minister of Women and Equalities does. You’re on your own there.

Carry on.

If only she was Minister for Silly Walks.

That might be an elected position.

blindboyard posts another news article intended to bolster his morally, ethically, and intellectually bankrupt misogyny? Color me flabbergasted.

I don’t say this often, but isn’t blindboyard right? Her comment sounds sexist and homophobic to me.

I was trying to figure that one out myself. I thought maybe Morgan was implying her male constituent was a “typical man” in that he was just questioning her abilities because she’s a woman. But she doesn’t say this in her response. In fact, she doesn’t really say much of anything in her response.

Here’s the exchange:

“As Minister for Women, charged with promoting equality for all women regardless of their sexuality, can you please explain to me how your new job is compatible with your strident opposition to gay marriage, which as you have said many times before ‘can only be between a man and a woman’.”

“Your e-mail is typical from a man so I suggest you watch what I do in the role and you will see for yourself.”

Oh, sure. Stupid fucking thing for her to say. But “politician says something stupid” is pretty much “dog bites man” news. I’m reserving judgment on her beyond that; I have no idea if this is a pattern for her. I’m not a huge fan of the Cameron government as a whole, so it wouldn’t particularly shock me if she were a complete asshole. But I don’t know anything else about her.

So yeah, I agree her comment sounds sexist and–potentially–homophobic.

Even a blind useless MRA woman-hating subhuman squirrel sometimes find a nut.

She’s a member of the Conservative Party. I’m a little surprised at the “typical man” bit, but not very surprised at the anti-SSM bit, whatever the party’s official position is.

True, but irrelevant.

True.

Three, actually, as Women and Equalities were held by two different personages before she took over.

Somewhat questionable on the Equalities front too, I would have thought. Straight rich white women are the only ones who need equality, though, it would seem.

Would be an odd form letter.

"The Minister for Women has overall responsibility for policy on women. "

"The Minister for Women and Equalities has overall responsibility for:

policy on women
policy on sexual orientation and transgender equality
cross-government equality strategy and legislation

Before July 2014, this role was covered by the Minister for Women and the Minister for Equalities."

…camping. Best one.

RNATB was clearing up your OP for us. The hes and shes were quite confusing until RNATB’s post.

Merneith, nor RNATB. I have done nothing to alleviate any confusion and I’ll not have you sullying my name with accusations of good-doing!

Shouldn’t that be homophobic and potentially sexist? Heading off a tweet with “typical men” could be a bad turn of phrase that’s not necessarily indicative of sexist attitudes. “Marriage is between a man and a woman only,” is a clearly articulated policy position, and inherently homophobic.

Oh, her positions are clearly anti-gay, no question. What she specifically said in this case, though? Not particularly homophobic in and of itself, AFAICT.
