Wait. Clint Eastwood was in 10,000 BC? Now I actually want to see it.
I quit around halfway in, which is rare. Saw what they were aiming for and how some would find it appealing, but it just didn’t work for me at all.
Since we’re sharing, one of my favorite films of all time is Nobody Gives a Fuck by Ingmar Ber<belch>
Of course Hollywood movies are not by definition bad. There are some good and some bad. I think people mean blockbusters when they say Hollywood
None of the movies you mentioned I think are any good, translation: I don’t intend to see.
I was going to watch Prometheus but after reading the review in The New Yorker and also in the Times and watching the trailer, nahh !
Don’t get me wrong I am fan of Mr Ridley Scott specially his early movies such as, well you know, "The Duelists’ and “Alien”. Of course Blade Runner, the one with the latest ending is my favourite version.
I wish I could go to as many movies as Equipoise. But nowadays I’m lucky if I go to one or two a year.
Ah, it’s become a bash Attack The Block thread then. I don’t care. I love it for specific reasons: the story, the acting, the dialogue, the characters (after the first half, anyway, since they most certainly are assholes at the beginning), the unusual and interesting aliens, the humor, the accents, the slang, the subtle comments on class, race, redemption and forgiveness, the MUSIC, oh god, the music, the opening titles, the closing titles, everything in-between, the fact that I met, talked to and got hugs from the director Joe Cornish and lead actor John Boyega (Moses, Moses, Moses) after a screening, but most of all, because it makes me happy. I’m always grinning like a fool when it’s over. It just makes me happy and that’s all that matters to me. That’s why I like it. If others don’t that’s ok. It doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the movie.
Not every movie is for everybody. Hell, I’m sitting here waiting for a revival showing of Citizen Kane to start. I haven’t seen it in the theater for over 20 years, sine the 50th Anniversary run. I’m excited. There are people who don’t like it either. I was one of them, until I saw it on the big screen, then I finally got why it was so revered and acclaimed and loved.
Big gorilla wolf motherfuckin’ rosebuds to you all.
I don’t have the time nor the inclination to watch every movie ever made or read every book ever written. At the moment I am in a phase of watching European police series, TV series that is such as Wallander both the Swedish series and the one the BBC shot with Kenneth Branagh in the lead.
I am also watching in measured doses the first and second seasons of The Killing and the third season of Spiral a French police series, which is the one I like best
Citizen Kane would have been great to watch when it opened. But a work of genius is always worth a watch.
Interesting definition of ‘bash’.
Suuuure you don’t. That’s why you had to go on a long rant explaining every little thing you love about it in detail. That’s why people can find you annoying.
You call that a rant? Jesus fuck, I can’t even write why I like a movie without people being assholes to me about it. And I’m annoying. Ok. I wish you people would put me on ignore, so if I open my mouth to say anything at all about a movie from now on you won’t get so annoyed.
By the way, quantity is not the same as quality. Watching every movie in town doesn’t mean you are a movie expert or that your are opinions are more worthwhile than the rest of us, it simply means an obsession with dark places and plenty of time in your hands and your mouth according to her.
I absolutely agree. In spite of what a couple of people have said, I’m not an expert. lissener has more knowledge about film in his pinkie fingernail that I have in my whole body. I have never ever tried to be Roger Ebert or any kind of a critic. Thanks MikeG, but I’m not a critic, I’ve never claimed to be a critic, I’d never want to be a critic. I don’t have or want a blog and the reason I keep track of the movies I see on Twitter is because a few other people are interested but mainly so I can keep track myself of what I’ve seen.
I do try to go for both quality and quantity. You may not be interested, but here are the movies I saw in 2011 from my Twitter feed, in reverse order. I guess I did like most of them, but I always try to find good things about a movie. I don’t go see movies I think I won’t like, but if I do go see a movie, I do want to enjoy it on some level. In spoiler tags so it doesn’t seem soooo pretentious and snobby and elitist and annoying and obnoxious or whatever the fuck. People who think I write a LOT about movies will at least see that I hardly wrote anything about many of my favorites from last year.

Garbo The Spy @ Facets. 2nd time. Not a great documentary but A-FUCKING-MAZING story! Who is going to make the feature film?? WHEN?
Joan Pujol Garcia was the greatest spy in British Intelligence history, hell, maybe ANY history, yet he’s totally unknown. He’s awesome!
His story is improbable, hilarious, fascinating, and 100% true. HE GOT THE NAZIS TO FUND BRITISH INTELLIGENCE! 1 amazing fact among MANY.
When someone (else) makes the kickass feature, Brits will wake up & say “Hey, he was OUR spy, why didn’t WE make that film??”
-

So I’m going to grab tim-n-va, gaffa, MikeG and anyone else who want to go and take them to see the truly wonderful Moonrise Kingdom. Maybe I should not mention the name of it so much. God forbid anyone get so annoyed by my adoration of the movie to the point where they obnoxiously say “If she mentions Moonrise Kingdom one more time I’ll poop in her toaster.”
So, sucking cock in the back of the theater does or does not make you a movie snob?
Need answer fast.
Have you tried getting the fuck over it?
only if you are watching an arty foreign movie
Well, after going with a fine tooth comb through the list of her favourite movies so kindly provided. I have come to the following conclusions :
a) I can’t see any rhyme or reason in her selection. It seems to me every movie she sees becomes automatically a favourite, well, almost every movie.
b) She is right when she says she is no movie critic, her one liner ‘reviews’ are proof of it. However most of her one liners although banal and superficial are sometimes no too off the mark. I said ‘sometimes’
c) For a movie enthusiast of her age is amazing to read that only last year she saw for the first time The Virgin Spring or Battleship Potemkin.
Well, I wished I were living in New York City and so be able to go and see those movies listed in every issue of The New Yorker. I’d love to watch every movie Fritz Lang directed. But, I am digressing.
My opinion of Ms Movies aka Equipoise is that she is definitely a movie enthusiast but lacking in critical discernment, she can’t really tell treasure from trash. She is not an intellectual and doesn’t claim to be one. She is happy watching movies and while watching a movie she also makes her companion happy, which if I were her companion would more than compensate watching a crappy movie with her.
Talk about being full of yourself. You’ve given us a good example of what it looks like.
Didn’t she already say that she doesn’t bother to write about the movies she doesn’t like? So it seems you are pulling out of your ass the idea that every movie she sees is something she likes. She just doesn’t post about the ones she doesn’t like. How hard is that to see?
Wow, you also point out that you think she’s right that she’s not a movie critic. Bravo for you for taking the tough stand! Honestly, I’m glad she’s not a movie critic because personally I think that professional critics are as useless as broke dicks. They get paid to give their opinion on a movie. Whoopdee do. I have this ability to watch a movie and see for myself if I like it. I’m funny like that.
Unless you’re someone who thinks they have to like the right movies and needs to be someone who can brag that they can tell “treasure from trash” and stupidity like that, most people just like to see what entertains them. This incessant need that some people on this board have for shitting all over things just because they don’t like them is baffling to me. There seems to be a belief here that if YOU (the general you) don’t like something it is unadulterated garbage and people who like it are stupid. For me it smacks of junior high mentality of needing to have what you like be popular and everything else sucks. Nothing wrong with posting “I hated _________ movie and here is why I think it sucked” but too often too many people here have to take on the idea that they are somehow enlightened and the people who like THAT STUFF are just ignorant/unsophisticated/tasteless/etc. I think that Doctor Who, Star Trek, Monty Python and most Joss Whedon is awful awful awful but what do I care that people like it? I certainly don’t think they’re stupid for liking it or that they have shit taste, it’s just different from mine.
How completely arrogant you are for assuming she lacks critical discernment. She isn’t deciding for everyone what is good and what isn’t, only for herself. It seems it is you who seems to point a finger at what other people enjoy. It’s not your job to discern for her what is right or wrong when it comes to something as subjective as taste in movies. Kee-rist, get over yourself and I say this as someone who has had some issues with Equipose’s tone in the past.
You call that being an asshole? Jesus fuck.
Can this nonsense thread just end please? Some people really need to get over themselves.
That was what put me off, and I turned it off after 10 minutes. I might give it another try sometime.
Same thing. I realized I was rooting for the aliens to eat them, and was constantly disappointed that they failed; I gave up when one of the thugs called the poor woman they had mugged a “snitch” for calling the police. I know the film was trying to portray them as lovable ragamuffins, and I just wasn’t buying.
I don’t know where to start since you are all over the place.
If that long list of her is just her last year’s favourite movies only, then it means that there are many more she simply likes and, adding them to that list doesn’t leave much room for movies she doesn’t like. I qualified my assessment by saying she seems to like ‘almost’ every movie she sees. To me this shows her lack of critical judgement, unless you happen by design or accident to watch mostly movies you like.
Although I don’t agree with every opinion of a movie by a professional reviewer at The New Yorker or The New York Times of The Guardian, Sight and Sound etc. I usually agree with their opinions, sometimes though with reservations. I find what they write it is a good starting point. I also watch the trailers because what seems good on paper sometimes is not so in reality. There are some actors, or should I say the characters they play which I simply find loathsome when watching them in the trailer.
I find the critics at The New Yorker the best, they are articulate, they give good reasons for their judgements, they sometimes ‘see’ things about the movie we don’t or most of us don’t ‘get’ and most of the time their opinions are in agreement with mine, therefore they are a reliable guide to me about what see or not see. As I said above, not always I agree with them.
I must add that even when a movie hasn’t received the best of reviews, I watch it if t sounds interesting. As I said somewhere else I don’t have the time nor the inclination to see every existing movie. There is more to my life than movies. Besides there are movies that physically I cannot possibly see, for instance some movies shown in some cinemas in New York since I am in Sydney.
It seems to me, you are one of those who believe that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’. That’s OK with me. I am not one of those who think that “beauty is simply in the eye of the beholder” well maybe it is, in a simplistic way. But art is not necessarily beauty, if you think that cinema is not an art, just entertainment then no more needs to be said about art. Go and continue to enjoy whatever you enjoy.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Ms Equipoise, I like her zest, her enthusiasm for movies, even her profanity. This is why I have commented on her.
I think my comments about Ms Equipoise touched a sensitive nerve in you.
