Equipose, we know you're a movie snob, get over yourself

And how many screens are showing all of the movies Equipoise mentioned, compared to how many are showing The Avengers? Even Hollywood executives have written about how little creativity is going in to developing movies in recent years, and how there is too much emphasis on remakes, sequels and adaptations from comic books.

I find it funny that you think I am all over the place when I was using your post as a guideline to post on the topics you discussed. Thank you for critiquing my post though, considering the topic that gives me extra lulz. And no, no sensitive nerve. I just think you’re back pedaling now from your original position where you insinuated that she doesn’t know trash from treasure.

I’m not sure I follow your logic in assuming that because I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder (and gosh, thank you for being okay with that I do, you are most generous) that somehow means I do not consider cinema to be art. Art is entertainment is many ways. Books, music, and cinema are all forms of art and of entertainment. It’s silly to think they can’t be both. And as in any form of art there are differences of opinion even among “experts” in each medium depending on what they do and don’t enjoy. Yes, some experts can praise style and still not like the aesthetic, but that’s no different than in movies. I can think Dinero is FANTASTIC in a bad movie, but that’s just my opinion. It isn’t any more or less valid than your opinion or anyone else’s because I’m judging it by my taste as I don’t really care what yours are. Just like Equipoise judges things based on what she likes.

Although you certainly seem to softening your words now, you certainly did insinuate that because she likes so many movies she doesn’t know (your words) trash from treasure. In that phrase you are dismissing her opinion as less than yours. You are not the arbiter of what is or isn’t good for anyone other than yourself.

The only thing Equi is guilty of fellating in a theater is “Attack the Block.”
EIGHT times.

Oh god, I don’t have time to read everyone’s posts until later (I overslept) but it seems there’s a misunderstanding. That list was not of my “favorites” it was just the list of films I saw in 2011! starting in January and ending in December.

I wish I’d gotten up earlier. Later…

Ok, I’ve showered and have about 3 minutes before leaving to go catch my bus. I don’t know what those blocks of texts say, but I won’t be able to read or respond until later this evening (no net access at work, then a movie). So whatever’s going on, I will find out.

Oversleeping sucks. I’ll make it to work on time, easy, but no time to sit down and find out what people are talking about.

I am not back pedalling at all. There is trash and there is treasure. And there are persons who can tell the difference and there are those who can’t.

Cinema can be art, and by the way I never said that cinema couldn’t be art and entertainment. However, It doesn’t mean that every movie is an artistic expression, in the same way that not every painting is art.

If beauty is simply in the eye of the beholder, then It would be pointless to have competitions of any kind or to award prizes to some movies for instance at the expense of others. In this case art wouldn’t exist. The drawings of a toddler would be as good or beautiful as a drawing by Rembrandt, specially if they were your kid’s drawings. No need for museums of course.

By reducing everything to just ‘taste’ (some people like the taste of apples and some don’t) then you dismiss art and you would be able to say for instance:

“You think my little 5 year old Mary’s painting is not as beautiful as that one by Rembrandt ? well let me tell you this : My opinion is, her painting is as beautiful, but that’s just my opinion. It isn’t any more or less valid than your opinion or anyone else’s because I’m judging it by my taste as I don’t really care what yours are. You are not the arbiter of what is or isn’t good for anyone other than yourself.”

When someone believes that beauty is simply whatever whoever thinks it is beautiful and that’s that then it is pointless to discuss movies or art in any form. So I’ll stop here.

But before I go, may I recommend to you a book that was the flavour of the month a long time ago. It was a quest for an answer of what is good and what is bad not only in regard to ethics but aesthetics as well. in brief, it was a search for a definition of Quality. It has a long title : “Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance” but it is not a long book.

Chao.

No harm done. My mistake.

There were some really good movies in your list, and some atrocious of course.

I am glad you saw some real masterpieces: I have never seen the complete version of Eisenstein 's Battleship Potemkin in its entirety. When he was in Mexico he made some drawings which are just beautiful.

Equipoise likes so many movies because Equipoise sees so many movies. She lists 366 movies seen in 2011, which is several hundred more than the average person, so of course she’s going to have seen at least a hundred more films she really enjoyed than the average person. And it’s clear from her list that she has extraordinarily broad taste…

I’m pretty sure that few people who aren’t movie reviewers would have seen those five films on the same day. And unlike a movie reviewer, she was able to pick and choose which films she saw, so that means she is more likely to see films she is likely to enjoy.

One things that some might have missed is this: this is a Twitter list, which meant that she was limited to 140 characters.

Goddamn are you stupid. Don’t use words you can’t spell. Holy shit. What is wrong with your brain? You tried being cosmopolitan and ended up as trailer trash.

chao.

(Del it. ciao).

  1. interj. coloq. adiós (‖ para despedirse).

  2. interj. coloq. hasta ahora.

trailer trash is what you seem to be. Your profanity, your ignorance, your stupidity, and last but not least your hostility are evidence of you being trailer trash material.

what’s wrong with your brain?
Chao

Trailer trash fight! Where’s the crew from COPS?

Then those executives are morons who can’t even be bothered to look at the frontpage of the IMDB (which typically features 2-3 indie movies a week).

Thank God you’re around to set them straight. Because lots and lots of people go to see Indie movies. Oh wait, I mean pretty much nobody. Pretty much nobody goes to see independent movies or even major studio releases that aren’t comic book adaptations, or remakes, or are original in any way. But, hey, Attack The Block is playing on none screens nationwide!

If you think “movies” only qualify for the title when they’re released in theaters (or make said executives any money only during their theatrical run), then you haven’t been paying attention to the movie industry for over 15 years now.

The fucking thread is about movies in theaters, shithead.

I am always delighted to see a thread started by Equipoise extolling a movie, because in the end I usually like that movie. Please keep making those threads, Equipoise.

Maybe, but I can spell, you fucking retard.

No, you can’t. “Chao” IS the correct spelling, you fucking moron. In Italian, it’s “ciao”, but it has an “h” in it when spelled in Spanish. Do you me a favor. Next time, make sure you know what the hell you’re talking about before you start calling people “retards”.

Oh good, it’s turned into a spelling thread. You don’t need me. It’s funny, I got home and sat down and before I could check my email, let alone check this thread, I was asleep in front of the computer. Since I have a very snobby 4 movies (3 indies and 1 classic) planned for tomorrow night, I’m going to bed. I have the whole weekend, no movies planned at all, shockingly enough, to sort all this out.

Maserschmidt, I scrolled up and saw your post. Thank you so much.
