Equipose, we know you're a movie snob, get over yourself

Tschüss sounds about as much like ciao as “chair” does. I.e., it doesn’t.

So be it

Hey! I want a divorce.

On the grounds that ‘tschuss’ sounds nothing like ‘chao’.

But, I am, with my monoglot ass, still impressed.

well, dahling, that is the nearest to ''chao" in the deutsche Sprache.

my ass, by the way, is also monoglot, so we have something in common.

the orifice below my nose, though, is multilingual

well, I won’t contest

Chao y vaya con Dios

Just to be clear, it was the umlaut I was contesting - it actually makes tschüß sound less like chao, not more. Some sort of general equivalence between the two words makes some sense, though.

Getting back to the thread: I came to this board largely because posters here have such varied and informed cultural interests…so the more enthusiastic movie reviews posted, the better.

Take me back!

I’ve now read everyone’s posts and thank you again to those who’ve defended me, and movies. I can’t answer/thank everybody because an endless quotefest would be hard to read, but I’ll pull up quotes over the next few hours in between my no-movies-weekend projects.

I know what you’re talking about now that I’ve had a chance to do some searching. You’re talking about this, and this and this and my other posts in that thread. Except for the Razzies comment (which was uppity and uncalled-for, and I apologize) I stand by what I said. The Academy would love for more people to watch the Oscars. Catering to those least interested in the very categories that make movies what they are is not the way to do that.

That’s where “it started”? I completely forgot your username two seconds after I made my last post in that thread, but boy, did you remember mine. You’ve been waiting to Pit me ever since, huh?

akwally1 and Erdosain, thank you for your posts.

Alka Seltzer and Alessan, I would like to comment on your comments about (Monkey-sized) Attack The Block. I’ll try to be very careful so as not to spoil specific plot points, but
I’ll still put my thoughts into spoiler tags.
Same thing. I realized I was rooting for the aliens to eat them, and was constantly disappointed that they failed; I gave up when one of the thugs called the poor woman they had mugged a “snitch” for calling the police. I know the film was trying to portray them as lovable ragamuffins, and I just wasn’t buying.
I really wanted you to know that the movie was absolutely NOT trying to portray these thugs as “lovable ragamuffins.” The female character Sam and the old woman call them exactly what they are and exactly how they’re intended to be perceived, as “fucking monsters” and they are. Nothing loveable about them. Certainly not at the beginning. But they are flesh and blood. One of the subtle subtexts of the film is, can people change? Once a thug, always a thug? Is it possible for a thug to redeem himself? Is it possible for a thug to quit his thuggish ways and try to be a better person? Some never will, even some of the characters in this movie. Others might have a fighting chance, but you don’t know. A thug who becomes a momentary hero can easily return to being a thug. Or not. But maybe not. You don’t just forget the bad things they did. It’s not intended that you do. But is it possible to forgive given some of the actions later in the film? Just a little?

The characters do learn a valuable lesson that they’ve not previously encountered in their embrace of dangerous thuggery, that left unchecked would certainly at some point result in death (of one of them or a victim) or prison. That lesson is “actions have consequences” and it happened to come first from aliens instead of the police or another gang member. But whether they take that lesson to heart and change their ways and try to be better than they were, and atone for their past sins? Again, at least one character definitely will, and at least one character definitely won’t. Another is iffy. Others will never have the chance to even try.

It’s a lot to put on to a little low budget alien invasion movie, but ATB has been shown and discussed in numerous psychology and sociology classes in the US and the UK because of these issues. You don’t get these issues by having a bunch of good guy kids fight or confront aliens, such as in Super 8 (which I really liked, except for the alien itself), so having bad guys confront and fight aliens brings a different level of complexity to the age-old trope. Would aliens ONLY ever land near where good guys live? Why not have them land near and be confronted by bad guys, some of whom will be killed by the encounter, some of whom will be changed for the better by the encounter, some of whom will never change.

None of these issues have to be thought about during the first viewing, but I needed you to know that you are not intended to like these guys. They are to be hated and feared. They’re despicable people. But they are kids, scary and dangerous kids yes, but maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance that they won’t go on to be despicable adults because of what happens to them in the movie.

**Equipoise **- I won’t spoiler this, because I’ll keep it brief. I don’t mind movies where the protagonists are criminals and even murderers - I love The Wild Bunch, and I love From Dust Til Dawn, too. I think the difference between those movies and ATB is that the “heroes” there *knew *they were bad guys. The thugs in ATB had no such self-awareness. They were just a bunch of shallow, thoughtless bullies.

Or maybe it’s just that they need to be played by William Holden or George Clooney. Could be that, too.

That’s the point, and why the events that may (or may not) have changed them is even more interesting to me. Plus, the protagonists in the movies you list are adults. These are kids who may (or may not) have their whole lives in front of them, to be different from their current state, to maybe make a difference in the lives of others, such as the two young kids, Probs and Mayhem, who look up to the thugs, who desperately want to “roll with” them and who at the start of the film are well on their way to becoming future muggers/thieves.

Apocryphal. He heard the words “Marco Polo” and assumed the Emperor was playing with himself.

Gladly !

Another lurker checking in to say keep up the good work, Equipoise. You make a good point that bears repeating every now and then. Tough beans if some people don’t lilke being reminded that there really is plenty of good stuff being made.

I’m going to catch Attack the Block first chance I get.

I stand corrected.

I said ‘gladly’ but then my other wife reminded me of something called bigamy or polygamy.
I dropped into this forum by accident, I was searching for some info using Google and ended up in a thread here. I thought it could be a place to talk about movies, books, art etc and also have some fun, joking around, that sort of thing. I love to banter, love witticisms.
The best thread here IMHO is the one about making fun of movie titles, the people there have come up with some hilarious lines. I contributed to it, but I realise that mine are not as good as the rest. This is the kind of stuff that makes forums interesting.
Have fun, you were great in a sarcastic way. I Loved it

Syme
(your ex from down-under)

PS Hope all is well in Angola

You are right. The first time I heard tschüss I thought it was the German pronunciation of our Spanish “chao” or Italian “ciao” so close it sounded to me. So I am surprised that so many people don’t agree with me.
Now I understand, the thing is that if Spanish is your first language, then when you hear a foreign wordd you try unconsciously of course, to make sense of it, and the first try of our brain is to try to decode it as Spanish. so for me tschüß was “chao”

I am sorry if I didn’t make myself clear.

In this particular thread so far I haven’t seen a movie review, where are they in this forum ?

I checked your profile and now I see why you fell in love with me. Because we have so much in common:

You were born on the 30th of April
I was born on the 29th of April

You are a sales, sales, sales person

I am also in Sales, retail that is.

I am in the process of being banned and my legs are trembling

so Chao, baby

So are you saying that I’M in the process of being banned too!? Dammit.

You’ll be a banned name.

I like Equipoise just fine, and mostly appreciate her input on movies. She does cop a superior attitude sometimes, but I don’t think that’s intentional. She’s just confident in her opinions.

On the other hand, if she mentions Attack the Block just once more, I will chip in to buy her a toaster.
