For pete’s sake. Was this the season finale? Usually when there are this many cliffhangers, it’s the finale.
Sam’s apartment is on fire, Pratt’s in jail, Meg and her daughter are in a car somewhere and Meg’s unconscious, and Abby came home to find Forest Whitaker in her living room.
Oh, and Abby’s long lost father has appeared.
Stuff like this ruins what was a pretty decent season. Lame lame lame.
It’s getting to the point where you’d expect cheesy soap-opera music to be playing.
Will the fire spread, or will Alex be done extra crispy…? Will Pratt get bail, or be forced to join the Chicago Crips for protection…? Will Meg’s car be found in time, before CSI sues us for stealing their plotline…?
For answers to these and other questions, don’t miss the next episode of e.r.
I kept hearing that “So you had a bad day” song whenever Abby was onscreen last night. Could we pile on her even more, perhaps give baby Joe a mysterious disease?
Even though Grandma handled herself quite well with Sam’s deliquent boy, I wanted Ray and/or Greg to walk over and do something to that miscreant. Maybe now that he’s burning things down, they’ll ship him off to juvie and we won’t have to see him anymore.
My eyes nearly rolled out my sockets when the few dregs of alcohol lit like a whole glass of brandy and then ENGULFED a glass coffee table in YELLOW (not blue) flames. WTF? If you’re going to have the kid burn down the house, couldn’t he have dropped a matchbook on the sofa or somethin’?
Maybe I missed some critical backstory about Sam, but just how big is that apartment on her nurse’s salary- kid has his own room, Grandma evidently has her own room, Sam & the Murse head off to her own room, living room is nice and big and well decorated- the hell?
They dropped Mafia guy with no explanation, just an offhand comment that it wasn’t a good environment for Sulky Boy. Perhaps she saved up from his generous salary.
Nurses in Chicago CAN make well over $60,000 (but probably not at County). A three bedroom in some areas (like mine) is as low as $1200 a month, up to tens of thousands in the Loop. It’s possible, but she ain’t paying for private school at the same time. We have a huge front room like that and three fairly tiny but indisputably separate bedrooms, as well as a dining room, kitchen, pantry and back porch for $1125 a month, which is slightly under market value for our neighborhood way up on the north side. If Sam was my neighbor, she’d be taking a 1/2 hour train ride to work, which is not unfathomable.
What’s wrong with her apartment, as with most of the apartments on the show, is its shape. 90% of Chicago apartments are long and narrow, with a front room (called a “living room” everywhere else), a hallway with bedrooms opening off of it and a kitchen at the back. It’s astoundingly uniform. The exceptions to this tend to be the really expensive places with newer floorplans. I can swallow that Kovich and Abby live in a non-linear apartment, but Sam undoubtedly would. But that would make for horrid filming.
But wasn’t Tony trying to talk Neela into a two bedroom apartment for $3600/mo? Abby and Luka live in a nice place, but he’s an attending (and making over $200k/yr, according to a recent episode), and Abby’s a doctor too, so it’s much more plausible that they can afford it). I guess it’s possible for Sam, but stuff like that bugs me.
Also, I was hoping that when Weaver left at the end of last week’s episode, she’d stay gone. Her return this week was pointless. Although without it, we’d have been deprived of Abby’s speech about “you watched me become a nurse, and a doctor, and a mother, and an insufferable moody bore. Thanks for all your support.”
Yep, and in the Loop (the downtown business area) that’s about right for a two-bedroom (excepting the luxury penthouse type places). But a short El ride north, south or west gets you into more affordable territory. Neela rolled her eyes at Tony’s idea, anyway. I couldn’t tell if it was a “yeah, right, I’m gonna move in with you after I’ve seen how you treat your exes” or “yeah, right, I’m gonna pay $1800 a month AND have a roommate?!” reaction.
I’m not saying they didn’t screw the pooch here. LA writers probably have no idea of apartment rentals in Chicago, nor do they care. I’m just saying that as a Chicagoan, nothing rang my bullshit alarm about Sam affording a three bedroom with a big living room or the price quote by Tony. There’s a huge range of housing prices here.
Abby’s dad to save the day and for them to be reunited
This episode lowered the bar quite a lot. The only things I liked were Carrie and Abby’s goodbye conversation, Sam’s little brat getting slapped, and the shot of Forrest Whitaker in the background as Abby is picking up the baby. Everything else was pretty much crap. I really liked this show, but these episodes are making things tough to keep watching.
I was on the phone for most of the ep, but this bugged me too. We had the lingering tearful look at the end of last show. Luka’s speech though got me remembering how much he has changed, how when he first arrived he was so cold and numb about having lost his family. I remember when you wouldn’t see him smile, ever.
What have they revealed about the nurse? I figure he’ll end up being an addict, since last week he had the narcotics cabinet key in his pocket.
Nothing more than that. In last night’s episode, he’s sleeping over at Sam’s place and they both have the next day off. So if they were going to spend the day together as well, and if he’s really addicted to something, we might have seen a hint. The little firebug put the kibosh on that though.
I don’t get the rapid spread of the fire either, unless there were a gazillion layers of Pledge on that coffee table.
I had a twinge of sympathy for Alex last night, when he was in his room and heard music playing from his mom’s bedroom. I assume that only happens when she’s entertaining and doesn’t want him to hear anything. He had sort of a defeated/disgusted look on his face.
Hard to believe Alex is supposed to be a teenager. He looks and acts about 10 or 11, not 13.
