Er -- 1/4/07

Who watched this week? I’m not sure if I’ve missed some episodes or not, what with the weird November-December scheduling. The last one I saw was the one where Meg and Sara found Neela and Jake in bed together at Meg’s place.

I’m starting a thread just to rave about Sam’s grandma. What a great character, and she had some good lines.

Sam: How long are you planning to stay?
Grandma: Until you throw me out, and not a minute longer!

Alex: What’s a mobile home?
Grandma: That’s uppity for trailer.

And after Sam finds out that Grandma was kicked out of her place for growing marijuana –

Grandma: It was for medicinal purposes.
Sam: You don’t have glaucoma.
Grandma: See?

I hope we’ll see more of her, and that she doesn’t end up sick, but since it’s ER, funeral arrangements are probably in order.

So, was this new or not? The channel guide didn’t have “new” next to it as it usually does, but I didn’t see this one before, and have only missed one (Thanksgiving night) this season.

Yep, it was new.

It was a decent episode, but I have a hard time separating the quality of an episode from some of the stupid things the characters are doing.

Some of this week’s stupid:

Sam is about to get involved with a new doctor (or intern or resident, not sure) who is probably stealing from the hospital pharmacy.

Pratt’s illegal work at the church has come back to haunt him, but Luka’s going to try to cover it up. (A patient died.)

Luka wanted to fire Kerry to reduce ER costs.

Sam’s son stole Morris’s credit card and his punishment was an apology and a promise to pay back from his allowance.

Neela is about to let Jake move in with her.

Jake brought his girlfriend’s daughter to work (school project) and he knew she would probably run into Neela.

Kerry made a promise to a patient guaranteeing a positive surgical result.

I just shake my head and keep watching.

I enjoyed much of this episode, but found the Sam romance plot utterly yawn-inducing. A new doctor shows up. He’s in a lot of scenes with Sam. Then the kiss. Could it BE any more predictable? And what’s interesting about him?

(But I don’t know what indicates that he might be stealing drugs.)
The scenes with Paula Malcomson (Stamos’s “girlfriend”) (and Trixie from Deadwood), on the other hand, were riveting.

He “accidently” kept the key to the drug room in his pocket.

In addition to the key, Helah and another nurse made comments about needing to restock the supply cabinet.

Max, you’re right, Sam’s new beau is a bore. Zero chemistry besides.
