I thought tonight’s episode of ER was the best in quite some time… and in general the show seems to be having a bit of a renaissance after a patch of suckage.
In particular, from tonight’s episode:
I thought Dr. Weaver’s scene with the deaf girl was very touching, the mathlete was hilarious, the electroejaculation was quite funny, the scene at the beginning with Luka was very well done, and I liked learning more about Pratt. The acting and writing were both excellent.
I agree, though I don’t think we need spoiler tags on a ep that has already aired. Laura Innes’ final scene with the deaf girl, was spectacular. The use of sign language was haunting, especially after we knew the girl read lips.
She was the one who brought in the Spanish-speaking man (presumably an illegal immigrant) who fell while he was cutting down her tree. I think maybe he wanted her to stay to give more information about the accident, help contact the man’s family, and just in general “be responsible” for him instead of just dumping him there and taking off. I don’t know whether she technically did anything wrong by leaving, though. I suppose she may have been worried about getting in trouble for hiring an illegal worker.
Pratt annoys me. I don’t watch the show regularly, but I just don’t like the whole deal with his brother, and hopefully they’ll actually DO something about it soon so we don’t have to have an otherwise good episode interupted by his screaming. I know that sounds heartless, but the way its done just really irritates me.
I think the show was good, too. I liked how the whole story with Weaver was kind of tossed in with a whole bunch of other crazy ER stuff…it kind of gave you a sense of the insanity around them, and how rushed it is in a hospital. I nearly cried at the end, too!
One thing I don’t get, is the insomniac patient…is that really how it is in the real world? If someone wants help like that, because they are afraid of urges that they have, they can’t get it unless they admit to something bad? That just seems like it does more harm than good! I don’t think things are like that here, in Canada, but with socialised Healthcare, maybe its different since the patient doesn’t have to foot the bill…I don’t know much about it, but I find it sad and scary at the same time, if things like that can really happen.
The thing that I wondered about was, what happened to the medical student Luka cracked up in his car? That episode (the backwards one with Luka and what-her-name having the accident) was the last new one I’ve seen. I thought it had only been reruns since then. Did I miss an episode? If so, how is the girl? Or, if last night’s episode was the first new one since Christmas, did they mention the girl last night and I missed it?
Oh, and our favorite line was Carter’s to the electro-ejaculatory technician – “Your parents must be so proud.”
Last night’s was the first new one since that episode. At one point someone brought in a note for Gallant, and he read it. Carter (I think) said something like, “A note? What is this, Fifth grade?” It was a note from Harkins, the girl who was with Luka that night. She had been getting help from Gallant for her schoolwork, and was being released that day. That was all we heard from her. Nothing on how badly she was hurt.
I must have missed that line entirely, or at least it didn’t make much of an impression… what was the context?
The line that had me laughing the hardest was “has anyone bothered to check if they actually have med schools in Croatia?”
When I saw Carrie break down with the deaf patient at the end, the only thing I could think was, “Yeah, that’s professional.” I just can’t buy a doctor (especially Carrie Weaver) letting something so personal be exposed to a young patient. No matter how much she was hurting or how recent the miscarriage was, I just don’t think it was all that plausible.
Call me a heart-less ass, but I just thought it was silly.
Other than that, last night’s ep was really good. And is it just me or does Abby keep getting hotter and hotter?!
It was when the guy came in and said he was the electro-ejaculatory technician or that he was there to collect the sperm by the electro-ejaculation technique. Carter deadpanned, “Come again?”
Yes, I’m twelve.
Because Kerry has an obsession with isolating herself from her staff emotionally and personally. She didn’t want them to know she was a lesbian, she didn’t want them to know she was trying to get pregnant, she didn’t want them to know she was pregnant. She refuses help all the time. Her personal nightmare is that people might be talking about her.
I felt so bad for her in that ep. I have a lesbian friend who’s almost a sister to me, and she’s currently trying to get pregnant. It hit awfully close to home…
I’m mad at kerry for being a lesbian… her and willow on buffy and xena… something about makeing someone that everyone watching the show rumors to be gay from watching a show actually turn out gay bugs me.
I missed a part. Who died? I got back in the room just in time to see Carter pronounce someone dead.
I, too, wondered about Carrie breaking down in front of a patient. I thought the interaction between her and the patient and her telling her she’d had a miscarriage in sign language with touching …and a bit out of character for her, but still had me. Lost me when she started crying.
Count me in with everyone who loved the Your parents must be so proud of you line. That was one of the funniest lines I’ve heard in a long time.
cadolphin, the flatline was the guy they rushed in later in the ep who’d fallen three stories. No real background or plot points about him…I thought he was just a plot device to point up the dearth of docs (Luka sent home, Pratt out taking care of Leon, Kerry dealing with the miscarriage).
