E.R. 9/25 ( spoilers)

As I watched this evening’s ep of E.R. I must say I was quite shocked…spoilers to follow.

I really don’t like the new NWA (as Frank put it) intern. She seems so…innocent and like she doesn’t quite fit or know her place in the E.R. yet.

Glad to see Romano, one arm short now, back in the E.R. and back to his usual somewhat wry, biting self. YAAAAAAAAAY! I was hoping he wouldn’t go away permanently. I wonder what his role will be now since he cannot be a surgeon anymore, or if his char will slowly be phased out.

Am I the only one who thinks Kovac is not really dead? I mean, the way Carter was hauling ass with those supplies makes me think he’s only really, REALLY badly wounded and not dead, although I’m thinking he dies in next week’s ep from the look of the previews. I am itching to see what happens with Carter and Kovac…grr. I dunt wanna wait till next week! And what’s going on with the Jing-Mei(Deb)/Pratt thing? When did they break up? I guess I either forgot that or missed it somehow.

First spoiler: Actually it was TWA.
Third spoiler: I considered that, too.

They’re totally setting up for a relationship between the chick from Bend it Like Beckam (I had no idea she was going to be on and was pretty excited when I recognized her) and Gallant (is that his name? The recently graduated MD).

I doubt Kovac is dead. I wasn’t paying attention during the opening credit sequence. Is that actor featured?.

Am I the only one getting tired and even a little irritated by watching Carter and Abby fight? It’s just… not fun. They are both being frustrating and curt and pissy. What’s fun about that?

I agree about Gallant and new girl. By the laws of predictable tv, Gallant is now ready for a romantic interest.

I actually think Romano might be not only around, but in for a redemption, maybe even ending up with Corday. He’s fun when he’s a racist prick, but they need to take the character somewhere now that he’s gotten his comeuppance already.

I doubt Luka is dead too. But hopefully he’s a LITTLE maimed at least.

Enough with all of the relationship drama, already! The whole episode Chen acts like a bitch because of some “misunderstanding” with Pratt. Abby and Carter bicker and whine about how they “don’t talk.” Lewis boffs her “ex-husband” in the bathroom. New med student is introduced to either give Gallant his long overdue love interest or to be a flirting target for Pratt—though that smirk she had after leaving the old woman’s room after yet another relationship conversation (“don’t wait too long” to get married!) makes me wonder if she might be a lesbian (dating material for Kerry, perhaps?).

I understand that this is a character-driven show, but it’s looking more like “General Hospital” than “ER.” I don’t mind the characters hooking up, and did like the relationship between Kovac and Abby. I like how Romano’s relationship with Corday has developed and appreciate how TPTB have teased the audience with the hint of something more (only if Corday hasn’t hooked up with that goofy vascular surgeon over the summer!).

But, let’s get back to the medicine! Even when they have episodes away from County (the single character episodes, for example) it makes for much better storytelling.

I know that it’s difficult to find interesting medical stories, especially considering how long “ER” has been on the air. I thought that we’d get one tonight (with the woman with the “rare blood disorder.”) I would’ve liked to have had a little more detail.

Anyway, enough with the bad stuff. I liked the finale and hope that this story arc plays out well. I also don’t think that

Kovac is dead.

…How did Romano lose his arm?

Yes, I’ve been away for awhile, why do you ask?

It got mixed up with a helicopter blade the beginning of last season. It was reattached but after treating it all season, it wasn’t getting better. In fact, if I remember correctly, it had gotten to the point where it was gangreen or something like that… where it had to be surgically removed the end of last season.

Okay, as one who seeks out actual spoilers – of the “this is what’s happening in the episode that airs two weeks from now” variety, I can say fairly unequivocally (don’t read if you don’t want to know!) that…
…Luka isn’t dead, he’s just close to it, suffering from malaria. Carter’s “discovery” that was hyped, with that close up of his eyes above his makeshift bandanna mask, is Luka’s fever-addled self, barely clinging to life.

This is what those in the know at the spoiler sites say and they’re proven their accuracy – we also know that Goran Visjnic remains under contract for the remainder of this season. :)
Anyway, now that the 9/25 episode has aired everywhere, I think it’s safe to ask questions without spoiler boxes:

Did I hear correctly that Susan is now the Chief of Emergency Services since Weaver is now Chief of Staff? Or did I misunderstand?

I doubt that any of our UK dopers will stumble into this thread, but on the chance that someone else might know, what was the significance of the East End/West London exchange between Elizabeth and Neela?

Did we see the conclusion of the storylines of any patients other than the exsanguinated infectious stent lady and the car accident mother?

Am I the only one who was annoyed by Carter’s mangling of the drug name Diflucan? It’s pronounced “dye-floo-can” with no stressed syllable, but Carter repeatedly said “dye-fluken” with a weird stress on the second syllable. It was weirding me out.

Ok, my thoughts…

Abby is being a real whiny bitch.

Susan is very unprofessional.

Pratt is acting like a jerk.

Frank should be fired.

And I hope TeaElle is right.

Nila is cute as a button, and I hope she hooks up with Gallant.

Basically repeating what others have said:

Abby and Carter should just drop it, already.

Pratt was being a jerk, but Jin Mei was overreacting.

I read somewhere that romance might be in the air for Corday and Romano.

Goran Visnic was in the opening credits, but that could just have been to throw us off. However, I don’t think Luka is dead. Yet.

Yes, we generally hear about it in the trades when an actor is leaving the show. We knew when Benson and Green were leaving, and when Susan left and came back.

I don’t think Jin Mei was overreacting. It was pretty obvious that Pratt’s interest in New Nila was more than educational. I agreed with Jin Mei, that it was embarrassing and humiliating.

And exactly what is up with Abby? Why is she so clingy and whiny all of a sudden?

So, since the actor who plays Romano still has both arms, is it being covered up with the coat or eliminated using CGI, a la Forrest Gump?

Oh, I agree that her reaction is understandable, but why take it out on the new medical student? The conversation with Pratt should have been sufficient to communicate her displeasure. I thought it unprofessional that she would be so snarky to a person who obviously doesn’t know that she’s an “ER Slut” (reference for the folks who watch the show regularly).
I can understand why Abby is upset with Carter–heck, he took off without really discussing it with her (and this is a serious enough relationship that he has a key to her place) and has been emotionally distant for quite awhile. What I can’t understand is why she didn’t use the talk to say, “Hey, what’s up with “us” and what can I expect?” Seems really easy and much better than having her whine about his “not talking.”

I hope so, my absolute favorite ER moments are the moments when Robert lets his love for Elizabeth show briefly. For example, after Elizabeth caused a spinal injury to a patient and was struggling to regain her confidence in a later surgery, he stood outside the door watching her without interfering as she struggled and when she regained her poise, he walked away.

I am not generally a “shipper” but I love Romano/Corday!!

Romano’s left arm is being ineffectually covered up by his scrub gown or whatever that garment is called. He has the arm tied up but there’s such a massive bulge under the sleeve it detracts from the illusion of having only one arm.

I understand Chen being upset about Pratt flirting with Neela, but that’s really no excuse for trying to tear her a new one in front of a patient and using the patient’s condition to trump Neela’s diagnosis. The theme of the episode was rampant unprofessionalism, from Kerry shrieking like a harpy at the construction workers to Frank’s racist comments to even Susan getting her swerve on in the bathroom. Sometimes I think I’d rather receive medical care from the folks on Scrubs.

sigh

Last night, I saw the ER intro start, and turned to another channel (an L&O rerun, as I recall). I used to love the show, but I have pretty much given up on it, and quit watching it about six episodes out from the end last spring. I no longer care what happens to Abby & Carter. If Luka dies it’s fine with me. Pratt is a major a-hole, and Galant deserves a better show.

The only relationship I care about at all anymore is Rocket & Lizzy, and I don’t care enough about that to bother watching.

All of which is too bad, because when ER was good, it was very, very good, and I miss it.

I like the new girl. And can I just say that it’s about damned time they got an Indian character on the show? Every time I go to the hospital I see at least a dozen Indian staff, they’re very well represented in the medical field and I was starting to think that Chicago existed in some kind of weird tri-racial (white/black/asian) universe.

As to Susan’s unprofessionalism–in total agreement. I have no idea what they think they’re doing with her character, or why they keep throwing such stupid storylines her way but Gah! The writers have pretty much destroyed any affection I had for her.

Frank–complete asshole. I can’t recall him making racist remarks before–is that something I’ve just been missing, or did the nasty “third world” comment come out of the blue?

Though the new girl does make for some very nice eye candy, and her character has potential, I’m getting a little tired of all the beautiful people on the show. Doesn’t the ER hire ugly medical professionals as well? Are we going to have to start ER “panda” threads to keep up with Star Trek: Enterprise?

That said, it was a decent episode… showing the accident happen at the beginning of the show broke their usual convention of victims just “showing up” in the hospital, and was effective in its way. I got the definite sense of something bad about to happen, while my wife thought maybe they were introducing a new character until the accident. Kind of interesting.

I’m a bit tired of all the relationship folderol in the show as well. It used to be maybe 75/25, with the actual ER docs’ work taking up most of the episodes. Now, the stats seem to have switched, relationships and “personal issues” taking up most of the time. What I really liked about the show has mostly become background noise for everyone hooking up with everyone else, and it’s a bit tiresome.

And Kerry seemed completely out of character. Did she go psycho over the summer or what?

This is why I’m actually going to start watching the show now. It is about damned time. It’s long overdue. And FINALLY there will be Indians on TV shows other than “The Simpsons.”

I don’t care about any of the characters anymore. Rocket Romano seems like he’s only suddenly arware of all the “improvements” going on in the ER? Surely something like that would be spoken of at meetings and even would get some press. I used to love Carter, but now I’m just …meh. Abby has always gotten on my nerves. And surely that newbie (not even a doctor or nurse) wouldn’t be responsible for monitoring patients and knowing how to read their complicated board. I don’t think anyone ever explained that. She’s a student. She’s supposed to be supervised. And Cordey is moving on to yet another member of the staff? Let’s see…first Benson, then Greene, now Romano?

StG

Jerry should pound Frank into a puddle and hide the mess in one of the construction dumpsters. That would make for a good storyline.
