I think it’s a bit much to call Susan unprofessional for trysting in the restroom with Chuck: longtime viewers recall that Mark & Jennifer Greene had an infamous episode in that same restroom, set off the alarm and had the entire staff run to walk in on them in the act and John Carter broke the rules by schtupping his student, Lucy Knight on the floor of Exam Four.
And let’s not forget the numerous couples who have been discovered in some level of flagrante in the workplace: Doug & Carol, Mark & Elizabeth, Peter & Elizabeth, Peter & WhatsHerFacetheShrewingPediatrician, Mark & Crazy Cynthia, the only ER couples never seen in an ill-advised clutch on the job are Jing-Mei and Pratt (though Jing-Mei’s sex life has certainly interfered with work) and Carter and Abby, who let their emotional baggage seep into the workplace every bloody day.
The decline of Kerry has been in the works since the beginnings of last season; recall the third or fourth episode when she used the same needle to inject the two television show hosts, then she inadvertently killed the alderman’s lover with her failure to do a proper medical history. She’s decompensating as a physician, she’s barely competant as an administrator and she’s apparently not doing so well in the relationship department either – when last we saw her and Sandy, they were fighting over the course of their mutual future. She’s in a spiral; I suspect she’s being set up for a significant explosive incident (personal, professional or both – perhaps related to the discovery of her birth parents?!) in either November or February of this season.
St. Germain – Romano has a good reason to be out of the loop: he’s been out of the hospital, recovering from the arm amputation.
We should keep in mind that in the ER universe, less than a month has elapsed between “When Night Meets Day” and “What Now?” Carter left for the Congo the day after “When Night Meets Day” ended and was there for two weeks. “What Now?” picked up the night he returned home and the day immediately after, given four days for him to travel, it hasn’t even been three weeks.
In terms of Corday (this is a Bonafide Spoiler - don’t read if you don’t want to know what happens in two weeks!)
In episode 10.3 (entitled “Dear Abby” – groan) we learn that Elizabeth has been dating Dorset, the hotshot vascular surgeon who pursued her as last season ended.
The Devil’s grandmother - Susan had a quickie marriage and a quickie annulment last season, after an unseen trip to Vegas. She and Chuck, her former husband, who is a helicopter EMT, realized that they still have the hots for one another and have been having an extremely sex-laden fling ever since, including this episode’s schtupping in the handicapped restroom.
Her sister’s storyline was kinda wrapped up in the “Third Watch” crossover two seasons ago. Unfortunately, it was so anticlimactic that I cannot recall what the wrap-up was. Anybody remember?
