ER 10/5 (spoilers)

Nah, but she was a “slut” (high school definition), smoked weed, swore a lot, ditched class, cheated on homework and was a Bad Influence on our Hero (played by the actress who now plays Sam.)

And in addition to that, was legitimately a really mean bitch for a long time. We eventually started to like her some, but I had trouble forgiving how out and out MEAN she was.

“Jesus is totally cool!” Good save, Morris. Oh yeah.

Actually, I thought this point was true to life. Morris’s invite was an obvious come on. I’ve known plenty of Christians far less nutty than she is that won’t date non-Christians.

I agree with this.

The exact storyline was used in a seventh-season episode called “Sand and Fog”, except it was an older lesbian pair, one of whom had a major stroke. I think the dialog indicated this wasn’t that patient’s first major health problem. The conflict was reversed in that the homosexual partner was fighting for a DNR (as she and the patient had apparently discussed at length) but they’d, rather foolishly I thought, never committed anything to paper and the medical decisions were made by the patient’s estranged brother, who elected to continue futile treatment.

So E.R. has started mining its past (and not even it’s distant past) for plotlines. That can’t be a good sign.

Until another helicopter comes crashing down, perhaps on Stamos, then it is a great sign…

Didn’t Weaver make a helicopter joke when she saw Ray with his gear on?

Abby said she’s be back to work in a month. If she had the standard 6 weeks leave, that makes the baby 2 weeks old  Oh, I forgot, she’s a doctor’s wife… surely the rules wouldn’t apply to her. Since the baby was a premie, it could be 6 months old and just be holding his head up. (Luka mentioned that) A full term newborn holds its head up at about a month.

Tivo is your friend.

She’s a doctor herself, Luka has proposed but they haven’t decided yet. I figured the baby at two months, since the FMLA entitles Abby to twelve weeks of leave, right?

Twelve unpaid weeks on top of a “standard” six week paid maternity leave if she wants it, right?

Let’s see…Joe was born at 30 weeks (Abby said she had “two and a half months”, or about 10 weeks left), and last week’s ep spanned 4 weeks, so he supposedly went home at 34 weeks - surprising, but not completely unbelievable, although that was no 34 weeker in her arms at the end of last weeks ep! (This is a picture right around that age for WhyBaby, to give some realistic comparison.) Preemies go through all that growing just to catch up to their due dates before they can really be compared to other kids (for the first couple of years), so a literally month old preemie is likely to be doing things a newborn does, not a month old baby.

This week’s ep seemed to start not long after last week’s ended - Weaver’s first day back as a “regular” doc hadn’t happened yet, for example.

If we assume Abby isn’t taking unpaid FMLA leave (which, as the parent of a preemie(on ER, especially), would be pretty dumb for her to take - who knows what crisis might come up later in the year she’d want time off for), then her coming back next week works well with the standard maternity leave timing, and THAT IS NOT A 36 WEEK PREEMIE (“36” still referring to his gestational age, of course, 'cause he hasn’t even hit his due date - he’s not yet “0”, he’s still working his way up through the negative side of the number line)! No way, nuh-uh, not even if his mom was diabetic and his father Andre the Giant.

According to the story, it’s still before Joe’s due date. Someone check that kid’s bottle for steriods!

Keep in mind, though, that Abbie went into premature labour because of a crisis at the hospital. It wouldn’t surprise me if the administration was willing to be very flexible on issues of maternity leave to forestall possible lawsuits.

I finally got around to watching this episode after tivoing it earlier.

I thought John Mahoney did an excellent job of playing a not particularly well written character. I’m fairly sure he’s gay IRL. He’s a wonderful actor. I first saw him in The House of Blue Leaves on broadway on a field trip when I was in high school.

ITA that the hospital is probably being very flexible on maternity leave with Abby after all she’s been through. I find it very realistic that hospital adminstrators would fear a lawsuit.

The opening scenes with Luka facing a potential malpractice case went nowhere. They must be setting up for future material.
