Er 10-6-05

Kristen Johnson is the first character worth introducing they’ve introduced in a while. You go, former leggy Third Rock beauty!

I missed the very beginning; what’s her role in the ER?

She’s the new nurse boss person. She’s also got a PhD in something, anyone got a guess?

How’dya like Luka wondering if anyone would recognize him if he were horribly burned falling asleep with a lit cigarette…again. And Abby not noticing.

But the cigarette’s safe in the ashtray, isn’t it? Has he done that before? Arghhhh.

Did anyone else see an ulterior motive in Kristen changing Sam’s schedule? Like maybe she thinks Luka is hot? I got a vibe there. Doesn’t make sense to cut shifts of one of your most competent nurses, and she saw Sam’s competence.

Nice to see Kerri back.

I dunno. I keep asking myself why I’m watching this show while I’m watching it. Tonight wasn’t bad but it wasn’t particularly interesting or well done either.

The only scene I liked was the one with Neela and Abby taking pictures while Morris attempts to watch.

His character may be not be Jewish but the guy who plays him probably is. His recitation of the bracha (blessing) was very authentic. I remember a similar scene where the character of Fleishman from Northern Exposure was morning the death of his uncle. You could tell Rob Morrow hadn’t studied Hebrew before and probably wasn’t Jewish because he stumbled through the Kaddish.

This episode was…okay.
I was kinda sorta hoping Kristen Johnson would have a slightly comedic role. I think the ER needs some more humor. It’s just so damned dark! Was it always THIS dark?

I hate when they over-Yiddish up the prayers. Maybe it is a Northeast/New York thing but none of my family or the Jews that I know over-Yiddishes it like that
“Baw-roowch awtaw adonoy.” Anyway, I see it all the time on the television thingy. I do remember that scene of Northern Exposure, LavenderBlue and Rob Morrow’s bad pronunciation, but what sticks with me was how they were trying to assemble a minyan and this burly redhead lumberjack is flown in and Rob Morrow doesn’t believe he is Jewish and asks him to say the Shema, which he does perfectly.

I don’t like this show anymore. It has gotten less and less interesting to the point that I find not a single one of the characters compelling except for the long-haired bitchy surgeon who now has cancer. Abby with the pity hook-up in the future?

At least now I can kind of nitpick the medicine again. It still is pretty solid when they actually get around to doing any kind of medicine (although with no basophilic stippling on the peripheral smear lead poisoning can be a tough call when a bunch of toxins can cause the same microcytic hypochromic anemia).

I was encouraged by this episode. It didnt completely suck, which is like two steps up from the last one I saw. (I missed last week.)

Or, the writers finally realized that the whole Luka/Sam storyline has gotten to be about as fun to watch as having a root canal, so they figured out a way to have them never interact again without losing either character. Works for me.

My mom’s a Yiddish speaker and that’s how she says it all the time. That was one of the all time great episodes of Northern Exposure before the show went completely down the tubes.

Have they made it clear if anyone besides Abby knows about his cancer?

She probably has a PhD in nursing. That would likely be a prequisite (or at least help a lot) in getting a job like hers.

That bothered me too. And the lack of male nudity.

It just occurred that Kristen Johnson is basically the most recent avatar of Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan. Loretta Swit should play her mother.

Re the Sam and Luka story line:

Yep. This makes much more sense than what I was thinking. Just because I’m hot for Luka doesn’t mean everybody is.

It would have been nice if the writers would let Sam and Luka and Alex stay together, maybe even work out their problems. But no, nobody can be happy or even moderately content on ER, because it’s not dramatic enough or something.
