Er 5/13

I’m surprised not to see an ER thread so I’ll start one. Just a few thoughts.

Happy for Abby, but I knew she would pass.

Is there any realistic scenario that puts Neila back in the ER next season?

I don’t think we saw Susan at all this episode. Did they say she was on maternity leave?

Near the end I was thinking, what happened to the gunshot from the previews? I figured it would be the father shooting the guy who hit his family.

I feel more anticipation about what will happen to Kerri’s baby than the outcome of the gunshot. We barely see Chen on the show anyway.

I think Nurselady is doing the right thing keeping her son away from his dad, but she’s going about it ass backwards.

My question is … what was that about?!

It seemed so disjointed and all over the place. Did I miss something, was Carter leaving? If not why was he carrying the traditional open file box that everyone who leaves a place of work always fills with their stuff?

I never liked crazy nurselady and her even crazier kid, so I hope she stays gone.

Doesn’t Luka always seem to conveniently be around the scene of accidents? As for the accident, right after the collision I thought I saw what looked like a dummy wearing a helmet under the car that hit the woman. Was I hallucinating or did anyone else see that?

And the business at the end just seemed so tacked on. Granted I can understand a someone wanting to shoot at Pratt, but a complete stranger in a car seems a bit far-fetched. IT was like they got to the end and realized they didn’t have a big enough life or death clip hanger and just tossed that in there.

I don’t know what else to say, it just seemed so lackluster and anti-climatic, then again that’s how the series has been for me lately.

I was put off by the slightest hint that the drunken/stoned driver deserved the tiniest modicum of sympathy. If justice were to be applied, he’d be the one without his legs.

It’s in the hole!

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I saw the show in snips, so unless I missed some foreshadowing, this is from out of nowhere.

FWIW:

The big kid gets hit, the shooter hits a pole and dies

I had to go out on a call and missed it. Someone want to give me a great big spoiler box and let me know what happened?

Oh, me too, me too! I fell asleep at 10:30 (geez, I'm gettin' old!).

I worked until 10, but I set the vcr to record - I’ll be watching it after I go get my laundry out of the dryer. If no one has put up spoilers by the time I finish, I’ll post them.

Way too long, but I typed this as I was watching, so you get the play by play.
Opening salvo:

Abby’s still waiting for her Board results. Neela’s been matched with University of

Michigan, Ann Arbor for her residency, and she’s stopped by to tie up some loose ends

before heading out. Pratt got a brand new car - Neela asked if he won it it in a

contest, but he said no, that not everyone has parents who buy things for them.
Terminal cancer patient arrives, no oncologist, wanted to die at home. Jing Mei gets in,

Pratt tries to get her to look at the car, but she says she’s busy from behind

sunglasses.

Luka’s driving (to work, maybe), sees a woman stalled by the side of the road. Traffic

honking, even though she’s pulled off to the side as she can. Woman has a kid in the

car, and keeps asking him to stay in the car. Woman is looking for jumper cables at the

back of her car - there’s a truck behind her who wants to get around. You see a black

car come around the traffic through a bunch of traffic cones (I guess this was a

construction zone too), which slams into the back of the truck, and that pins the woman

between her car and the truck - and then you see her hanging between her car and the

truck, with her legs dangling.
Opening credits…blah blah blah…
Carter gets condolences from the staff, including Frank. Kerry looks thoughtful - asks

Carter if he’s ok, we find out that Kerry has a court date today.

Switch back to Luka the good samaritan, woman can’t feel her legs. Kid is stuck in the

car - they finally get the door open.

Cancer patient puking. We finally see Jing Mei, who has a black eye. Cancer patient

declares that he’s not ready to die. Once again, we hear that Abby doesn’t have her

board scores.

Pratt sees Jing Mei’s eye - she claims she ran into a door. Neela sees Dr. Pratt, tells

him that Elgin (the blood pressure/heart problem kid from the last two weeks) is being

discharged today.
Back to Luka - jaws of life. Luka has, of course, broken all kinds of protocol out in

the field.

Pratt goes to see Elgin, who’s waiting for his mother to come pick him up. Elgin asks if

Pratt has an office somewhere, since his family doesn’t have a doctor.

Sam learns that Alex is not in school after the school calls her at work. Abby comforts

Carter.

Accident woman and kid arrive at hospital, along with the guy that hit them, who claims

that he’s not taking any drugs or alcohol, but no one believes that because he smells of

alcohol. Driver tells Pratt that he has to “back me up, brother”, and Pratt tells him

that he is suspected of DUI and that he’s not his brother.
Commercial
Much blood and gore from the woman and the kid. Woman can’t feel her legs. Corday

arrives. Internal bleeding. Woman wants to know about her son. Woman doesn’t want to go

to surgery until her husband arrives. Jing Mei’s eye is still black and everyone wants

to know but no one asks. Auto accident kid crashes. Kerry’s worried about Carter working

on him because the baby just died and sends Jing Mei in to help him. Kerry has to leave

for court.

DUI guy tests positive for opiates. Cops are waiting for him. Auto accident woman is

sent to surgery for “BKA” and some other surgery, done together.

Neela’s driving to Ann Arbor, looking thoughtful.

Auto accident kid is crashing. Three chest tubes later, Carter saves the day.

Abby has to go see cancer patient, who wants his own room. Finds out that cancer patient

was a junior high teacher for 37 years. Kerry calls to talk to Abby to find out if she’s

called about her scores. Abby’s trying to call, but auto accident victims’

husband/father arrives, so she has to take him to see the kid - mother already went to

surgery, since she swas going to die.

Sam goes home, finds out that Alex’s father kept him home from school, was smoking pot,

and has taken a job in Dearborn, managing an apartment complex.

More commercials.

Kerry and Lawyer at courthouse. Conservative judge. Kerry complains that she’s being

penalized for not having a large family - but only to the lawyer. Sandy’s family brought

Henry.

Sam pouts in her bedroom. Alex’s father comes in, we learn that he has to go to Dallas

to pick up furniture and stuff, so takes off to get it.

Cancer patient has to pee, Abby has to help. Abby learns that he taught Algebra.

Accident woman in surgery. Trouble controlling bleeding, legs being amputated. Accident

kid still coding. Carter figures out the problem and saves the day.

Pratt asks Carter about Jing Mei. They think it was her father. Pratt has to go deal

with DUI guy - we learn that it’s his third strike, so 25 to life. Kid thinks that’s too

much, asks Pratt who says he thinks it’s too low. DUI kid rips on Pratt some, tries to

make him feel guilty.

Neela stands outside her car, smoking.

Sam starts packing. Alex complains because he doesn’t want to leave. Alex calls her a

bitch.

Carter and accident husband arrive at surgical suite, as surgery is finishing up. Luka

goes to talk to husband, tells him that her legs had to be amputated.

Abby calls the association that covers boards, learns that her scores were sent to the

hospital, not her home. Frank tells her that he would have filed any mail with everyone

else’s mail. Then someone arrives looking for cancer patient, so she can’t go hunting

through the file just yet. Guy turns out to be former student of cancer patient.

Apparently “someone” called the school and told them about cancer patient (privacy

rules?)

Courtroom. Kerry talks to judge in the courtroom, against advice of her lawyer. Judge

says that they will be notified of the decision.

Commercials

Sam and Alex packing. Alex calls Luka and tells him.

Neela arrives at Ann Arbor for orientation.

Carter talks to accident dad, and tells him that surgery on the kid went well. Accident

mother wakes up, accident dad tells her about her legs. Tears all around.

Abby looking for her scores. Frank filed them under N for nurses, not L for Lockheart.

Neela’s orientation. She askes to speak to the director (?) after he tours them around

the facility

Abby passed her boards - just in time to begin her residency. Carter heading home with

the box under his arm, no idea what’s in it.

Neela tells director guy that she doesn’t really think she wants to be a doctor.

Withdraws from the residency at Ann Arbor. Has no idea what she’s going to do.

Another former student has now arrived to see cancer patient. Cancer patient asks Abby

if she’ll be his nurse tomorrow, and she says no, but she will be Dr. Lockheart.

Alex and Sam packing car. Luka arrives. Sam won’t tell him why they’re leaving. Sam

takes off. Luka stands there looking forlorn.

Jing Mei takes ibuprofen. Tells Pratt that she was just trying to give her father a

bath. Pratt tells her to ask the nurse to stay an extra couple of hours so they can go

to dinner.

DUI kid is discharged and arrested. Elgin’s mother still hasn’t gotten there to pick him

up. Pratt offers to give him a ride home.

Pratt, Jing Mei and Elgin in the car. Guy passes Pratt, tells him through open windows

to pay attention to the road. Pratt tells him to calm down, Elgin flips him off through

the window. Pratt leaves road rage guy behind by speeding, road rage guy catches up and

starts shooting. Much weaving, swerving, then more gunshots, the end.
And, Casey, how exactly do you know this, or is it just a guess?

I actually liked this episode, although I agree about the ending feeling tacked on.

I thought the part with the cancer patient’s students coming for a visit was super cheesy, but I liked it anyway. So sue me.

However, what the hell is wrong with Sam? I know exactly how she is feeling about her son, because I was married to that guy for a while myself. But she’s going about this SO wrong. She is NOT required to let her son see his father unless he pushes it through the court system. And seeing how 1) he probably can’t be bothered to file a complaint, and 2) No judge in their right mind would allow him unsupervised visitations why doesn’t she just tell him to bugger off?! As if her kid isn’t going to be just as screwed up from being shuffled all over and living in hiding as he would be from exposure to toxic dad.
Not to mention she has Luka sniffing around her, for Gods sake! Hmmmmm…mega-loser ex who is bad influence on the son, or mega-hottie doctor who could at least be a shoulder to lean on if nothing else? What a heart-wrenching choice! I felt sorry for her last week, but she blew it this week what with her total inablility to stand up to the prick.

WAG … perhaps “BKA” stands for “below the knee amputation”?

That’s what I assumed once I got later into the tape, but I just didn’t go back and change it above.

Our assumptions were correct.

Assuming that’s a guess, I’ll offer my own:
Big kid gets hit, shooter crashes and nearly dies but has his life saved by Pratt and Mei, though not before one or both of them expresses the opinion that they should let the jerk croak.

The shooter eventually dies anyway, of complications unrelated to Pratt/Mei’s on-site treatment.
I’ve gotta say, this was the most disappointing season finale I’ve ever seen. I was expecting a cliff hanger, but actually I couldn’t care less what happens to any of them, except Kerri and the baby.

The only interesting part: When the terminal cancer patient came in, I had this nagging feeling that I’d seen the actor before, but couldn’t place him. Until once when he was yelling, and my mind’s ear heard him yell “Maude!”

Thanks for the excellent summary Lsura. 'ppreciate it.

Ok so here’s my thoughts for next year:

 1. Jing Mei gets shot and passes away (like someone said already, she hasn’t been getting much screen time, so she may be looking to leave).

 2. Sam and Alex end up going to Luca’s apartment and he helps them out. (Now that Abby’s a doc, they need a cute nurse to step up)

 3. Neela comes back and either begs Weaver for an internship or starts working up in the lab with the guys from earlier in the season.

 4. Kem goes home and Carter decides he can’t go with her, so he stays and ends up getting back with Abby eventually (sort of like a Ross and Rachel situation)

 5. Kerri gets Henry.

I think Kerri will get Henry, but only for two weeks out of every month. Just a feeling about that judge…

Couldn’t Sam have called the police when she found her ex yanking her kid out of school and getting high?

I’ve hated the whole storyline about Kerri and her son. It’s inconceivable to me that a firefighter would not have set up a will with explicit instructions for the care of her child. A firefighter and a doctor are both actuely aware that you could die unexpectedly.

I don’t think the police care too much about fathers getting high with their sons. Unless he was violating a restraining order, it’s probably a social worker problem that would take months to resolve.

If I’m on the money, then it’s my amazing intuitive powers.

If I’m wrong, then it was just a guess.
