I just found out about this - next tuesday, David Lynch’s classic Eraserhead and a short films collection are coming out on DVD for normal ($20) prices. You’ll actually be able to walk into Best Buy and pick it up!
In case you’re not a Lynch fan, Eraserhead was released on DVD a few years ago, but you could only get it by ordering it from www.davidlynch.com for $50. It came in some sort of oversized coffin box or something.
I was one of those who bought it from Lynch’s site. It comes in a black box that’s way too freakin’ huge to fit on any normal DVD shelf. I make a cover and put it in a regular snap case.
So, how does it look? I heard that Lynch labored over the transfer for years, and reportedly had trouble with the black and white not causing problems with the letterbox bars or something.
I bought the $10 version off Ebay with Korean subtitles (you can turn them off). It’s been a while sice I watched it, but the quality isn’t all that great and I don’t think there are any extras on it. I just wanted to see the flick.
I got to see Eraserhead on the big screen in 2004, oddly enough. For some reason, David Lynch authorized a Memphis theater to show a DVD proection of it. He actually sent a DV recording of himself wishing us all well and talking a bit about the movie and such, which they showed before the movie. It was bizarre; there were only maybe 30 people in the theater. It also resulted in my having something pretty rare: See here.
Not sure I’ll buy it on DVD, though; I can’t quite convince myself I need to see it again.
