For reasons that need not trouble any of you, I used a quote about someone looking like ‘an erection in a cravat’.
I half-remember this as a line from a review or gloss of the appearance of Buddy Love, the ultra-smooth but very slimy alter ego of the fusty and gormless Professor Julius Kelp in the original The Nutty Professor film (1963). Jerry Lewis plays both Buddy Love and Kelp, arguably to perfection. My memory is that an American critic used the line to allude to Love’s magnetism and oleaginous sexiness on screen.
Google is no help in tracking or verifying the source of the quote, the correct wording or even film. Do any of you older people remember this and can either verify or correct my memory?
