Eric Roberts' Career

Consider the Eric Roberts, Lance Henrickson gem Nature of the Beast. Little cat and mouse, consider it the battle of the B’s.

I don’t know why he is the poster boy for B list actors. He is far better thespian than sis is.

That was the lovely Rebecca De Mornay in an unusually non-glamorous role.

On the subject of Eric Roberts, has anyone anywhere ever seen a picture of him and his sister together?! Or read an interview where either mentions the other? I know I remember reading early on in Julia Roberts’ career that they don’t get along, but do they like hate each other?

They seem to be members of a very dysfunctional family. Recently, their half sister died in Los Angeles and both Roberts gave rather perfunctory statements concerning that tragic event. They certainly didn’t do any public mourning about it.

A outside observer might be led to believe that older brother Eric was jealous of his younger sister’s brief burst of fame during the 1990s and that their relationship never recovered from that.

Not that I’m an expert on the dysfunctional Roberts family, but some years ago there was a custody thing with a child Eric Roberts fathered with a girlfriend, and Julia Roberts took the girlfriends side and paid all her legal fees. This apart from any earlier jealousy over careers…There can only be guessing and speculation over their problems, of course. Who knows? Drugs apparently play a part, maybe personality/mental issues. There probably isn’t just ‘one thing’. It’s like the lifelong feud between Joan Fontaine and Olivia DeHavilland. They just aren’t close/hate each other - who knows why? It’s really none of the public’s business. Each has acquired fame in the acting world, that’s the thing that’s relevant here.

That’s his own fault. Maybe he’d be a bigger star today if he hadn’t signed on for the Fox “Doctor Who in America” TV movie.

Yeah, I agree. I’m not interested in discussing tabloid celebrity dirt. It’s just that both of them are the real deal, they are both very talented, so I was always curious as to their relationship. I never thought he was particularly jealous of her success. She did shoot to stardom quickly and stay there, while he had initial big success with King of the Gypsies and Star 80 and then kind of never surpassed that. But not for lack of talent, she’s a leading lady that can open & carry a film on her own, whereas he isn’t really a leading man but more a character actor.

This from his Wiki bio sums things up:

On January 12, 2001, Roberts visited The Howard Stern Radio Show with his wife during a segment called “The Gossip Game” with Mike Walker of the National Enquirer. He confirmed that he and his sister Julia Roberts had been estranged for several years. The source of the estrangement had been his past drug abuse and her siding with his ex-girlfriend over the custody of his daughter, Emma. In 2004 he told People magazine that he and his sister were reconciled when he visited her in the hospital after she gave birth to twins.
