Escaped Tiger in San Francisco

If I were on the zoo’s legal team, I’d be trying to assemble an all-tiger jury.

Just get my handbasket ready now.

'Twas the night after Christmas, when all through the zoo
Not a creature was stirring, not even a tiger…oops!

Well, I don’t live there, but I have to tell you that if a goddamned tiger was allowed to escape from his enclosure at the Toronto Zoo and ate one of my relatives, I’d sue their asses off. The zoo, that is, not the eaten relative.

I guess it’s about time to post this.

Well damn right the zoo should be sued. There’s been one death and several serious injuries, and the victims and their families are entitled to redress. IANAL but I couldn’t imagine a better example of a just lawsuit.

It’s too bad for the City and County, but it’ll survive it.

It’s kind of sad that the deceased person has not been identified yet. Apparently he had no identification on him and no one has called looking for a missing relative.
I noticed that the tiger’s attacks were both in December, around Christmas time, perhaps the tiger had Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Oh, that’s just SAD!

I don’t understand why there were visitors in the zoo after it was closed. Why was the cafe open in a closed zoo?

It looks like the attack occured sometime around closing time, and the call came 15 minutes after closing time. It may have taken some time for the caller to clean the crap out of his pants before locating a phone.

As I understand it, the zoo’s regular hours are until 5 PM, at which point it’s “Please head for the exits” rather than “You’ll be locked in at 5:00” - on top of that, they’re having a seasonal event called “Reindeer Romp and Ice Skating” so they might be a bit more flexible with the hours at the cafe so people can warm up with one last hot cocoa before going home.

There don’t appear to be any scheduled this week, but the zoo also offers overnight camping events, so they do have legitimate reasons througout the year for people to be there after hours.

I must say this has been by far and and away the WORST display of puns I have ever seen on the dope. Each attempted joke made me die a little inside. Not unlike having my sanity eaten away by a tiger.

This is one of the shittier big city zoos- hopefully they’ll get sued into bankruptcy and close and someone will reopen a real zoo in its place.

Didn’t you read the fine print in the SDMB membership rules? There is a sanity clause.

lobster: I won’t butter you up. Some of us are just hardboiled. Thick skin, and all. You practically have to have a carapace or you may crack; otherwise you should move to a new burgh.
ETA:

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but there is no sanity clause.

If the Dope insisted on sanity, who’d be left?

SFGate article updated 20 minutes ago names the victim and describes them as a 17 year old from San Jose. He was there with two friends that happened to be the other two people attacked. Those two are still in the hospital, but doing well. There’s been no indication that the three of them did anything to taunt or provoke the attack, other than looking tasty. (This brings to mind the Far Side cartoon of alligators remarking on the lack of claws, scales or anything else in the way of their feast.)

As for the timing, the “breaking news” came at about 5:15, in the midst of the regular evening news that I happened to be watching, so obviously it had to be before then.

Ummm . . . good point.
Question: Is it better or worse to die as the victim of a traumedy? E.g., is it better to get run over by a regular car on the higway, or by a miniature car at the circus with 15 clowns inside?

I vote clown car.

Well, if you can’t be shelled by an elephant while dressed as Peter Peanut, I suppose that’ll have to do.

is there room in that basket? i would have gone with “manwich” as the type of sandwich. whoa! that is quite the poster! not at all like the cuddly tiger calendar i have.
it is a horrible time for the 17 year old’s parents. goodness, i can’t imagine what that notification was like. heavens!

hopefully the 2 who are in hospital will have a good recovery. house cat bites can be quite toxic. a tiger bite must be incredibly toxic. jack hanna mentioned he knew a vet who died 8 months after a tiger bite due to infection.

tigers do love to swim in their moats and are able to escape if the water level isn’t low enough. i don’t know about this zoo in particular… i have talked to architects who specialize in zoos. bears and tigers (swimmers) are challenging to contain with the habitat enclosures. they need water to keep them happy, but it can be very tricky with water levels. tigers being leapers as well as swimmers are very tough.

tatiana the tiger seemed like she was a very aggresive tiger, esp. around food. the attack last year was during a feeding show and she went for the cafe this time.
