Has anybody else noticed that the Indiana license plates- when viewed from the correct distance- look like it says “Espana” instead of Indiana? Something about the font used makes the D ends up looking like a P.
In addition to making us giggle every time we see an Indiana plate, we now regularly refer to people from Indiana as “Espanaians”.
This year’s Indiana plates have been splattered with controversy. The designer was steamed because the words “Back Home Again” at the bottom were replaced by the state’s web address. He was not notified until they came out.
The old stamped numbers were replaced by a printed font, probably to reduce the number of prisoners needed to make them. The letter after the county number was made the same size as the numbers. Police groused because the new font was hard to read.
A rebellious graphic artist started making stickers. The idea was to cover the webpage with the original “Back Home Again.” Turns out, it wasn’t illegal to cover the web ID, but the tourism agency owns the rights to the phrase.
The first try to mollify the police shrank the letter, but the cops said they still couldn’t read them. The second try used a thinner font and the shrunken letter. The police said that was okay.
And now…you say, we’re all Espaniards. It’s wonderful to have such an entertaining government. WooHoo! Yo soy de Espania. I guess that makes all Hoosier dogs spaniels.
AskNott, I never knew a license plate could cause so many problems. How’d you find all that out?
Sorry for the slight thread hijack, btw. In Wisconsin (where I’m from) we have a name for you Illinois drivers, but that’s a whole 'nother thread (that’s probably been done in the Pit already).

Does Florida actually offer that plate? Do they also offer a “Pro-Choice” plate?
That doesn’t sit well with me. On an issue as touchy as abortion, the government has no place putting its imprimatur of endorsement behind one side or the other. That’s too much like a license plate that reads “Choose Christian” or “Choose Buddhism”.
Pipper–if this is the correct Florida license plate index, then they do not have a pro-choice plate. This being the south, however, I’m really not surprised.
Yes, as others have stated Florida does not have a Pro-Choice plate. There was a lot of controversy over that plate when it was first proposed and even more when it was OK’ed. I’m not Pro-Life but it doesn’t really bother me. I mean, is anyone actually going to be influenced by a license plate regarding an issue such as this?
And yes, Florida does have that many specialty plates. When I first moved here 3 years ago I was shocked at the number of specialty plates available. It is a system gone awry.
