ESPN (again)

I wasn’t sure where to put this, as it could go in Cafe Society or even in the Pit, depending on how this goes. I’ll leave it to the Mods to move it if it makes sense to them.

I have largely stopped watching ESPN, since each of their “shows” has turned into a shouting match. But, since the Pirates are in first place and have the best record in baseball, I decided to try ESPN’s MLB Now. Sadly, it is the same argumentative, created conflict dialog that drives me crazy.

Brian Kenney and Harold Reynolds are the two idiots, and they are, of course, “moderated” by some woman with a 4-pack a day habit who serves no purpose other than to read the topics and announce to each combatant that the “bell” rang. They have also tried to set this up as a “new school” vs. “old school” contest, but it is so tedious to watch… you cannot disagree on EVERYTHING, and have such passion for each of these topics, but Brian Kenney in particular seems especially psychotic. Reynolds, to his credit, seems to try to keep his voice and blook pressure down, but when someone is saying “you are wrong!” with the smarmy grin of a loser like Kenney, it gets a little old.

This show is added to the list of ESPN-created verbal slugfests, including the ridiculous show with Stephen A. Smith vs. Skip Bayless (ESPN First Take?)… and the more lighthearted but still annoying show with Colin Cowherd and the blonde, where they don’t necessarily argue but instead just speak very loudly. Of course, we can never forget the two half-hour screamfests, Pardon The Interruption and Around The Horn. ATH is interesting for a number of reasons… the first is that it is hosted by a guy who used to be called “stat boy” on PTI, and second, it has sports reporters like Woody Paige and Bill Plaschke (sp?) who actually CARE if they win, particularly the bald, chubby lisping Plaschke, who always cringes and verbally bursts out when someone bests him… he also whines “awww Tony” or “oh, come on!” and pouts when he loses. Pathetic. I enjoy PTI because I like Mike Wilbon, and can tolerate Tony Kornheiser in small doses. Very small doses.

Anyway, I started to think when this trend started… and I came up with the pathetic arguments between Sean Salisbury and John Clayton during the NFL season, when they argued about everything and started insulting each other for ratings. I believe Salisbury quit or was fired for his dislike of the daily faux-bickering.

Is this what TV is going to be like now? insta-polls and reading tweets from idiots?

The dumbing down of America continues at a break-neck speed.

In 20 years, I fear shows will be two people crouching opposite each other, grabbing feces from their own butts and throwing it at each other… or the camera or audience, depending on what the home viewer votes on. I can’t wait.

I know I’m getting old, since I don’t need the constant viewer polls,

Kenny and Reynolds work at MLB network!

Salisbury was fired for sexual misconduct.

Go away! ‘batin’!

Ever watch Fox News or CNN when they have on guests with opposing viewpoints? It’s just stupid. No debate or discussion, just who can outshout the other.

NPR and sometimes MSNBC can have an intelligent discussion on a topic. If you listen to a discussion of opposing viewpoints on NPR you can actually learn something.

I’m with you. I can’t stand watching the histrionics, turn it off and then I don’t go back.

So yes, it’s no surprise that ESPN has followed the Fox, CNN formula.

Pardon the Interruption and it’s lesser (but still entertaining) progeny, Around the Horn, are great. And anyone who disagrees deserves to be verbally abused by Kornheiser.

Tell ya another thing that bugs me about ESPN, and it’s other sports network brethren.

The fricking scroll across the bottom that is there ALL THE FRICKING TIME. I’m trying to watch my Braves on FOX SportSouth right now, and the crawl is really bugging me tonight.

If I gave a flip about the WNBA scores, I have access to the internet, I can look up the damn scores.

This seems to be the way of the world, these days. Almost every information channel does this, weather it be sports, news, or weather. The ESPN crap all over the screen, the side scroll and the bottom scroll, and whatever else they try to jam on the screen to occupy your brain, and you can’t even see what in the hell they are showing. The bottom scroll added with the description actually covers the picture, obliterating the catch, the play at the plate, or whatever they are trying to show. Hasn’t anyone noticed this?

Lately, with the Aaron Hernandez story, you’d think the world was coming to the end.

I hate ESPN.

Oh, and Justin_Bailey, PTI is barely watchable these days. If you are ever lucky enough to see the who from even a few years ago, its much better. And if you go back to the beginning, those guys actually SPEAK to each other. No screaming, no craziness.

I admit, I haven’t watched PTI regularly in a while. But I was there at the beginning and I loved it. So I’ll probably always have a soft spot for the show.

No kidding? I thought Harold Reynolds was canned for that.

No matter. I don’t miss him.

He was. And to the broader question- yeah, this has become a major part of all news coverage. It’s useless but the networks feel it keeps viewers engaged or something.

There’s a whole wiki article detailing ESPN canning guys for harassment.

I thought Cowherd and the blonde both left Sportsnation.

The NFL show with Jaws and Hodge they show at 2:45 in the am is pretty good on ESPN… of course that’s why you can never FIND IT…

Ive frequently asked the young guys on another sports board why they are so focused/fascinated by what Skip Bayless and old white had to say… They’re literally frothing at the mouth… I wonder how skip will explain this… rah rah rah… I remember when the guy was an actual writer/journalist. He gave all that up to be a carnival barker. I get better basketball analysis from this guy on youtube named Coach Nick… his Bballbreakdown videos are pretty tight… As for football… sane information Peter King… Matt Bowen…

This is as good of an opportunity as any to air my newest complaint about ESPN: what is **up **with the incredible overuse of sound effects while showing highlights? (Or use of sound effects at all, for that matter – is watching sports not sufficiently entertaining by itself that ESPN needs to add another sensory cue?) The worst is an overamplification of what I assume to be some sort of crowd noise, played whenever someone makes a basket or drains a golf ball, or whatever. It’s some sort of metallic sound … aargh – it just makes me angry thinking about it – that is played All. Of. The. Time.

I cannot understand why producers would add something to their shows that actively drives viewers away. I used to love watching SportsCenter; I honestly can’t watch it anymore.

You couldn’t post an example, could you? I don’t recognize what you’re talking about with that sound effect.

I’m looking for one online, but (of course) can’t find one easily – I swear I hear it every time SportsCenter shows highlights. It’s sort of an amplified crowd noise, as reaction to a home run or dunk or whatever, but very loud and very metallic and hollow-sounding.

I never liked ESPN much anyway. Now I have the NFL Network, and don’t have to hear about all the sports I don’t care about. Which is nice.
