Guys, as a non-fundamentalist Christian, let me step up to say something nice about/to both Eternal Student and anyone else.
The most important thing about Christianity is to love one another. Including our enemies. It took me a long time to understand the part about loving our enemies, but I kept it on faith for about twenty years before I understood just how divine it was. Love is really the only important rule for me as a Christian, I do not pretend to speak for others, through. Life is just so much more pleasant and rewarding when you soften your heart and love.
As for heaven and hell in the sense of an afterlife, I don’t find them to be motivators. I don’t know that they exist, and I don’t care. If there is an afterlife, God will send me where I belong, and if it is his will, then hell. But I really find it hard to believe that the God I worship would send anyone to an eternity of unfathomable torture. It is entirely inconsistent with the life of Jesus Christ. Nor have I seen any physical evidence of the existence of any afterlife. But I am not good because of threats or promises. I have a life of everlasting quality (exactly what I was promised, nothing more and nothing less) now, because I can turn to God to help me love even my enemies and know peace in my life.
We are all just people, and even the meanest of us (now don’t make me go defending Hitler or Charles Manson work with me gang) are God’s children, some mother’s baby and deserving of good thoughts going their way.
Eternal Student might want to consider becoming a student of liberal theology, it can be quite beautiful.
In case you missd it, Eternal Student acted like an asshole. His assholishness was rathercompounded by his obvious ignorance. Consequence: people are going to point out that he’s an ignorant asshole. That’s got nothing to do with you, unless there’s something you’re not telling us. If you really do need someone to flame you, let me just say that persecution envy is, like, so infinite-number-of-years-ago. Grow up.
Incidentally, while he sure doesn’t need me to defend him, this agnostic would like to say: You fuck with Polycarp, you fuck with me. Rather than think up something original, let’s just pretend that I said exactly what Jodi did, with a couple of pronouns switched around. It’s much simpler that way.

I don’t see why you find this thread offensive at all ArturoBandini. If you consider Eternal Student’s remarks a little over the top you probably should consider this thread only mildly offensive.

I have been reading this board since around July. I joined in September. In my opinion, I’ve read a great number of posts in the past four months or so. I’ve even followed the posts of particular members. I have been reading or posting for two years, but I have been paying attention.
But, Albert, you are basically correct – but it also applies to Jodi and Student. Can Jodi give more than just one example of Student being an “asshole”? Right now she’s being just as bad as she thinks Student is. The fact that no one (besides maybe Uncle Beer) seems to notice this is what pisses me off.

If he’d read anything of Poly’s, there’s no doubt he’d have a different opinion about him. And if he knew anything about the saints (the Catholic saints, not the SDMB saints ;)), he wouldn’t be calling fence-straddlers “polycarps.” I’m not Christian, and even I know that one is wrong.
Actually, this isn’t based on just one post. ES has been wandering around GD ever since he got here talking about how all religious people are stupid. As someone pointed out, he started shit in the ‘Ask the Hindu Guy’ thread.
