I don’t think it’s necessarily because he doesn’t know poly, as much as this guy comes in and picks poly as an example of someone to ridicule and judge because poly doesn’t meet up with ES’s standards of being a Christian. And that’s bullshit no matter who says it. Nobody has the right to come in here and judge others’ lives based on how they follow their religion, regardless of post count. ES even goes farther than that, implying that he knows exactly how poly lives by saying, “In other words, he does the bare minimum in order for him to get to heaven.”

How does he know what poly does when he isn’t posting? I’ve been here a long time, and I wouldn’t pretend to know what anyone does when off the boards. I have no doubt that if I was to say the same thing about anyone here, I would be dragged to the Pit and chewed out just as well.

Who the fuck is ES that he can pass judgment on how poly worships? That’s none of ES’s business. That’s between poly and his God alone. Nobody has the right to do that around here that I’ve seen. This isn’t a post-count issue Arturo, it’s an asshole issue.

This particular newbie didn’t make a simple mistake: He singled out a poster and purposely attacked his lifestyle. From my viewpoint, it’s no different from attacking a poster for being gay, Wiccan, etc. and I would expect to see a Pit thread opened on any poster who would attack such anoter’s lifestyle, so long as that lifestyle doesn’t hurt anyone else.

I think there are some very intelligent members on this board, and I think some very interesting topics are broached here. I don’t see why I am not allowed to disagree with what is occurring in this thread, or at least why it bothers you. Again, this is hypocrisy. I am trying to make a point about this hypocrisy, and as I have seen, the only way to get yr point across in the pit is to talk trash - even Minty Fresh implied as much in my open letter thread. Just tryin to be “one of the boys,” eh…

And who’s wasting their life? Me, who attacks this hypocrisy? Or you, who wants to follow people like me around and try to pick at our shit?

Sir, you are entitled to your beliefs, ill-founded as they may be, but you are clearly wrong. I am against newbie bashing, too, but this “one post” of ES’s is beyond the pale. By attacking, and he did attack Polycarp in a particularly brutal and personal manner, a man who has earned our love and respect, ES has placed himself outside the community and deserves whatever flaming he gets. OTOH, were he to attack me, another long-time poster, in a similar manner I would not be, and would not expect to be, defended the same way. I would probably deserve it. Polycarp does not. And Eternal Student does not deserve your defense. It just makes you look like a jerk.

Polycarp specifically called E.S. out in the OP. Admittedly, he didn’t do it in a particularly rude manner, although he did imply that E.S.'s comments had been “annoying” and “missed the mark.”
And some people have made it about newbies – see Yue Han and Esprix’s earlier posts in this thread.

You’re right, Polycarp has earned YOUR respect. Respect is not a transferrable commodity. Perhaps he has not earned ES’s respect yet. I have close friends who hate eachother, two people who both have my respect, but not each others. You know what? I keep my mouth shut about it. Just because Jodi respects Poly doesn’t mean ES has to, even if he is a newbie.

Hrm, let’s see. Polycarp posts for months and months in a reasonable, intelligent, loving manner and earns the respect of all who have taken the time to read his words who come to his defense when his name is slandered.

Arturo lurks for a few months, posts 35 posts, and foul-mouths everyone for their obvious stupidity and meaniness and says “nyah nyah” a lot.

Re-read the OP. Jodi attacks ES based on one post. There is no evidence offered by Jodi concerning any other posts which may serve as examples of ES’s being an “asshole.” Jodi also made reference to ES’s “Newbie” status, derisively calling him “Mr. Eighteen Posts.”

That’s pretty clear cut.

I was appropriate in this case since ES seemed to think he had it all figured out. Emphasizing that he was new here showed that ES clearly did not have enough information with which to come to his conclusion. Does he know that Polycarp councils abused kids? Does he know that Polycarp opens his heart and his home to anyone in need? No, he didn’t know that. Why? Because he decided to open his mouth instead of his eyes, which is the whole point of this thread.

IMO, this is where you abandoned logic. If you’re going to debate, this is not a good thing.

So this jackass insulted our dear dear friend, and we know our dear dear friend isn’t the kind to drag people to the pit for a thorough spanking, so we’re doing it for him. But if you had been here long enough and read some of the threads Polycarp’s posted in (and been insulted in), you’d know that.

And he is making this “point” in an insulting manner, which is both uncalled-for and not allowed in GD. For example:

“He selectively chooses those areas of christianty that suit him best and adopts these. Any aspect of christianity that would otherwise impede his normal everyday life are discounted as silly and old-fashioned.”

This is an insult.

It is pointedly offensive to accuse someone of having religious beliefs for the express purpose of “making life easier” rather than accepting or entertaining those more difficult to follow but that will allow for a closer relationship with whatever deity (or higher figure, or what-have-you) said person has professed to follow. It is further insulting to name such a group after a person (as in ES’s naming of those people he believes to be lax in their religious activities as “polycarps”).

I’m not Fenris, and I don’t play him on “Whose Line is it, Anyway?”, but I’m going to take a big ol’ leap of faityh here and say he’s not interested.

I don’t think it’s the questioning per se, but the lack of background information, the way in which said “questioning” is presented, and the apparent total lack of respect for another poster (Polycarp) who had done nothing to Eternal Student to deserve such an (albeit pathetic and wrong) response.

Eternal Student: You might want to look at how many people, of very many different religions and points of view, have come to Polycarp’s defense, and consider revising, not necessarily your own basic beliefs about religion, but your views about the man’s personal integrity.
