Dinner one night. Otherwise paying for some of the extra stuff that gets used. If you are drinking, offer to pay for some of it or go out and buy some. I have lived in vacation spots and dinner out + a share of the drinks is plenty for short visits.
Staying for a week? Offer to clean, buy food or to do anything else that will help out.
Or you can do like a friend did when he and his family stayed with us recently: Ask us to kennel our dog first (no), show up emptyhanded (fine) then complain afterward about the bed, the noise and our lack of a fan for your room (crossed of invite list).
