Etymology of "Sasquatch"

I recall reading that the Sasquatch of Salish folklore was not the creature that we lovingly know today as Bigfoot. Rather, he was just a human guy who chose to go live by himself in the woods. I’m not able to run this down, though–my searches for “Sasquatch folklore” are continually frustrated by churning woo. Does anyone have a citation for this, or am I a victim of constructive memory?
