I concur.
I think the only thing saving this from the Pit is the fact that the thread would devolve even further into a bile fest rather than the initial tone of the OP which I thought was to be informative.

Well, I sense some some weaselesque behavior by putting the thread here. If a decision was made that would clearly provoke disagreement, then perhaps it belonged in the Pit from the beginning.
I certainly can’t blame anyone for voicing distaste in the one thread devoted to the subject. I doubt the Admin would appreciate a separate thread opened in the Pit.
For a minute, I thought this was a warning to Euty…
I don’t know. There was no statement to the effect of “and please don’t open a Pit thread on this subject,” even though we were provided with little information. The OP was nothing more than a press release.
I don’t think anything has been said or implied that would preculde someone’s opening a Pit thread if they so chose.
I don’t think I attacked Scotticher. If she feels so, then I apologize. I merely offered some advice from a dispasionate poster to the thread. Scotticher even posts
. I don’t want her to “shut up”, rather don’t bring this to a head in this thread.
I simply felt that she was trying to vent her feeling about the matter in this thread. I felt that this thread was more of a “let’s get on with life without bringing down the house” thread as opposed to the alternative Pit roasting. And the number of posters who are merely wishing Euty well are doing the right thing.
Una, Anthracite, in her usual wisdom, tempered by having her own board, posts that
If members here think that the Administration of this board enjoy or take delight in the action against Euty, they’d be wrong. It’s a no-win situation for everyone. Posters, Mods, Admins.
I take Ed Zotti’s putting this thread in the Cafe Society section at face value. The people that are the most affected read CS. It was a good move, IMHO. Nothing devious, IMHO.
All the very best, Eutychus.
Thank you for your work here.
Sorry to see Euty go. Will he at least still be able to post here as a “lowly” member?
Meanwhile, if he is placed on hiatus, then what happened with CK Dexter Haven? A waved finger and a “don’t do that again”?? I’m stunned that since those threads were locked there hasn’t been a word said (so to speak) on the matter. I’m surprised he hasn’t come forth with some form of “Oops,” if not “I’m sorry.”
Huh.
I’m of reasonable confidence when someone on here says hiatus, they mean hiatus. Euty will, therefore, barring further untoward actions, return, yah?
And who’s doing teemings?
When a television show goes on hiatus, it almost never returns.
Television shows go on hiatus every spring. Haven’t you ever heard actors talking about the movies they made “while on hiatus?”
** Eutychus**–a good Doper. There is no higher praise.
This is not the first time Eutychus has either taken or been put on haitus from moderating at SD. Euty has a long, successful relationship with the administrators here. There is no reason to assume that he’ll never return to moderating, or that they won’t be able to maintain a successful working relationship even if he’s not moderating for a while (or ever again). He is, afterall, still a contributor to the Straight Dope Staff Reports!
For the record, I did not tell our dear, sweet Scotticher to “shut up”. What I did say was that I could tell by reading her posts that she was extremely upset, and that continuing in this thread in the heat of that moment would not be a good idea, either for herself, for Euty or for the board. I felt that she’d stated her opinion, reiterated and defended it and that was really all that was necessary. But just like C K Dexter Haven allowed himself to become righteously indignant with only the partial facts that had been made public, I felt that Scotticher, who by her own admission had “had no dialogue with Euty or anyone else involved in the recent situation about this,” should perhaps take a step back and not contribute to making things worse than they already are, without all of the facts at her disposal. Like the classy lady she is, she agreed.
To Euty and the rest of the SD Staff, I hope you can resolve whatever strain there has been between you. This has been a very difficult situation for everyone involved. May you all heal from this soon.

Why? Scotti’s right. Ed put this thread here, Gaudere has closed a thread about the subject started in the pit, where else are we gonna talk about it? The whole thing stinks, and the administration is in full cover up mode, the Bush administration has nothing on them. Ed even told Euty that he couldn’t write about the situation in his (Euty’s) personal, private live journal ( Although how he’s going to enforce that now that Euty’s no longer a moderator, I don’t know). The simple facts of the matter are that Dex acted the consumate asshole and Euty got, quite rightly, mad about it. Rather than do the right thing, the administration kept with it’s policy of never admiting that an administrator could be wrong and they sacrificed Euty on this crucible. Honestly, I will never understand why it is so hard for some people to just say “We were wrong”. This whole thing would have been over weeks ago if they had simply disciplined the person who was out of line, instead they have taken it out on an innocent man and the community here knows it.

He’s still a member, though. So in theory they could ban him.
Bad coding! No donut!

IIRC, Gaudere only closed the Pit Thread after the OP asked (and e-mailed/"report this poste"ed) to have it closed.
I assume that a Pit thread on this topic is OK (IANAMod, etc)
Fenris
Wow. Whole. E. Crap.
It’s amazing how much my mood swayed as I was reading the posts.
My judgement on the situation is that is was a bad deal all around, like Scylla said.
Dex was allowed his social morality. There’s no rule saying Dex can’t act like a regular poster, but IMHO he’s an Admin and has a set of behavior that’s supposed to go along with it. He didn’t just “speak his mind”, he gosh darnit flamed her in her MPSIMS thread. As fact. And the first train wrecked, so there was another thread in the Pit. And Euty gave Dex a piece of his mind and many people gave each other a flaming piece of their minds, and the second train wrecked. Ed made a post which defended Dex, which Dex might have needed some techincal backing up, and more people gave a flaming piece of their minds and the third train wrecked. I don’t know if that train wreck is an ongoing one, however.
In the end Euty gets the shaft?
This is a big pile of something ugly I never saw until now.
I don’t want to turn this thread into another trainwreck (so far this thread has been pretty civil, unlike others), so just dismiss my humble opinion all you want.
I signed on about 40 minutes ago and the first thread I went into was this one, almost the only thing I’ve done is read the backstory so far. I feel like getting away from this board for the rest of the day.

It seems like Euty got a raw deal - though I don’t know what behind the scenes emails, discussions, and arguments have taken place. I do hope that with the clarity of time’s passage, Eutychus will participate in any and all roles that he wishes.
Euty What will you do with all your free time on hiatus?
Enjoy the time off. You deserve it.
Well, I’m a fairly frequent poster and a long-time reader of the column, but I’ve never really been a part of the “community,” on a first-name basis with anybody on the boards.
But still, Eutychus has always struck me as a very smart and well-read guy with a great sense of humor, which sums up the general “personality” of the SDMB in the first place. The other side of the SDMB “personality” – the arrogant, know-it-all, smarter-than-thou blowhard geeks has more than enough representation, and Eutychus always seemed like a good counter for the forces of good.
But most of all, he’s always come across as a decent man. Even if you think that kind of thing doesn’t come across over something as impersonal as the internet, especially with the people who don’t make much effort to get to know you personally – it definitely does.
