Even worse than last week's MMP

Oy, I wish I knew math. I’m trying to figure out if I have enough yarn for this project. Who here knows math? It should be simple for someone who knows how to create the equation. Here’s the word problem version:

Starting with a row of 9 stitches, every row is then increased by 2 stitches. If it takes one complete skein of yarn to complete the row containing 299 stitches, how much yarn would be required to complete the remaining rows in the piece ending with a row containing 375 stitches? In other words, how does the yarn required to complete rows from 1 to 299 compare to the yarn required for rows 299 to 375?

Can anyone help me? Please? I have to knit four pieces this size, and I have 5 skeins. (Okay, actually I’m knitting a double strand so I use 2 skeins at a time and have 10 skeins, but it’s easier to just divide by half to do the calculations.) I can get more of the yarn easily enough, but it won’t be the same dye lot, and this was all they had.

Man, I wish I could do functional math.

Ugh, you just made my head hurt! Don’t do that! I suck at math, so I’m afraid I’m no help.

I have been working my ass off this week. One would think it would have disappeared by now. Unfortunately, it’s still there, big as ever.

Back to work. Yet another crazy project…sigh. I need a vacation, dammit.

Tigs never mind math. Have you gotten that work done, young lady? No? Well, march right back in there and get busy! I mean it! Don’t look at me like that! You want your face to freeze like that, young lady? No matter, you still need to get that done. So, get busy! I mean, now!

That was just in case you’re goofin’ off rather than doin’ what you know you’re supposed to be doin’.
Pizza et. Da bear full. ACBG home to do paperwork. Da bear had bubble bath. Don’t know why post like caveman.

OK…I’m good at math, but knitting math? I’d probably mess it up. We’ll wait for Jahdra to pop back in and I’m sure she’ll have an answer…

See, I knew y’all were my peeps: Opus and Bill the Cat! Faraway Best Friend and I used to have all kinds of inside jokes that were based on Bloom County. To this day, I can’t say I’m appalled without at least thinking “I’m appalled with 2 p’s.” (Correct response to this is “I’m Scarlett with two t’s.”) I even used to cut Opus out of the paper for her (it wasn’t originally available online); it’s not as good as Bloom County (I don’t think), but at least it’s still Opus and Bill…

My favorite translation story is about my mom. We were invited to dinner because our friends had some American friends visiting (this was in Mexico). The Americans didn’t speak much Spanish, so my mom got to interpret. She tried, really she did. But she got to the point where she heard one side of the conversation, turned to the others and…repeated it word-for-word in the original language. Cracked us all up immensely (I was about 10 at the time).

So, in case anyone was wondering, you have to have actual talent to be able to interpret. I went to a 2-week course in Germany about a million years ago and there were a whole lot of translators and interpreters there. I met one guy who was an interpreter for some part of the European Union. He spoke about 5 languages flawlessly; totally blew me away. He was Danish and could switch to English or German without thinking. Neither Mom nor I have that talent. (I can do one language at a time really well, but it’s a lot of work to move back and forth between languages.)

Of course we read your belly-dancing descriptions, LiLi. They’re exhausting. I’m pretty sure reading one dancing description burns off all the calories in one of Mork’s danishes.

Love the kitties, kai. Daughter looks sweet too.

Drae! Hi Drae! Should we start suggesting baby names?

The negotiation doesn’t sound like fun, MBG. But it does sound fairer to do a one-year contract.

I’m sure there was more I was going to say, but I don’t remember what it was. Gotta go work on valentine’s. (I got yours today, Jahdra; thanks!)

Back later…

Bear talk like caveman because Bearet pizza. Pizza make strong man talk like caveman. Make woman feel fat and full. Me like pizza, no like feel fat and full. So, me no eat pizza too much. Me eat chocolate instead. Not good.
Can’t stop talking this way. Slap me, please.

::Slaps rigs::

(Hey, you asked!) Now, really, I’m gonna go finish the valentines…

Ugh, fog like pea soup and drizzle, just like yesterday. Skiffman is out spliting wood for the banya, which will make my old bones all warm and toasty, and my muscles all relaxed in time for bed tonight!

I played with the camera last night, but photobucket is being slow to upload the photos I took. I’ll add them as they become available. I thought I would show you the (heh) kittens, but then doggyservant requested Poms, so I got a couple of them as well, and also my beautiful African Violet which is blooming it’s baby head off. I absolutely love this camera, and I have barely scratched the surface of what it can do.

Yesterday was utterly pissy until the camera came, and so I was hitting the nerve tonic before the mail came (bringing my camera, which made life much happier) so Sean I am sharing your post nerve tonic head. It’s not too bad, but it’s there. Plus some sinus stuff, stupid cat (Kazz) slept on my pillow so I am also feeling allergic, and probably the two benedryl I just swallowed will send me off to napland pretty soon.

Yay FCM regarding the new car! It’s real purty, too!

li-li I read through your dance movements, but in no way do I ever feel the urge to stand up and attempt to replicate them! My back and hips would promptly go out and send me to bed if I even gave it a second thought, lol! I admire you and the other ladies who are so inclined, it’s gotta be a major workout. Thanks for the update on QD, that sort of friendship is a good thing.

Drae it might do you good to heed the wisdom of the small child, at three years old my nephew not only predicted my pregnancy, but he was the only person to predict a baby girl…daughter #3. Just sayin’…

I love Bill the Cat, and Opus, one of my all time favorite comic strips was Bloom County.

MBG remember Perfect Paranoia is Perfect Awareness!

back when the kittens were kittens

The kittens today:

Deirdre and Calalloo

Deirdre and Jack

These two have a stronge siamese influence in body type and vocalization. Then there is Bo, who, I believe, must have had a Maine Coon daddy:

Bo snuggled up
Bo’s a big kitty!
Bo limp as a dishrag

More later, did I mention how much I love this camera?

Why do I keep hearing Sonny & Cher?

Is it me, or has kaiwik posted the same post 3 times? Is it Groundhog Day and no one told me that I would be reliving posts, again and again?

gt --maybe you’d better slap me again. Not too hard!

RE the whole real life math/knitting thingy. Go buy a shitload of yarn. If you don’t use it all, you’ll have extra for something else! This is Rigby’s solution to math problems that make my head hurt. I can’t even read the whole thing…

That’s what I did. I got a bunch more than the recommended yardage. But then I outfoxed myself by using a double strand. :smack: But that’s okay, I got Papa TIgs working it out for me. If it’s math, he’s good at it. I kid you not, and Palebunny will back me up on this, he sat there and multiplied 137 x 38 in his head and came up with an approximate answer in a matter of moments. He’s scary that way.

What’s most annoying? There was a time when I could have figured out how to solve that problem. Now, like everyone else here, it just makes my head hurt. :frowning:

How in the heck did I triple post that? I apologise, and I promise to never do it again. At least not on purpose, if it just spontaneously happens again I am gonna start calling my computer Christine.

Photobucket is so sloooooooooow, but I am uploading pommie pics, so just a little while longer…

I figured you did that because you wanted so badly to show us that not only did you know how to use your camera, but photobucket as well…
Y’know - I don’t intend to get exercise when I go to rehearsal, but when we break into sections, the Leads stay in the big room, because they have the most people, the Tenors sing in the Ladies’ Lounge because there’s only 5 of them, and usually not all at once. 7 Baritones fit nicely in the lobby. Where do the 13 basses go? all the way down the hall to the classroom on the other side of the building. It feels like a quarter mile (I’m sure it’s far less)
My knees hurt
Tigs - Algerbra was my best math, but I hated, HATED the word problems, so even if I could help you figure that one out, I won’t (well, maybe if you ask real purty-like… )

Surely singing is exercise? Singing plus walking is super-good exercise!

Work was okay. It’s nice to be home. Tomorrow will be quite busy, preparing for Sunday through Friday at work. Ugh. The baking and stuff will be nice. Maybe QD will come over and wash dishes. Or Attacks Husband will wash dishes in exchange for bread.

There’s a trick to solving problems like that.

If you know something grows like:

i.e. it adds the same amount each time, what you do is you cut it in half

<cut>

Then you rotate the bottom half around and up like:

Which gets you a square. So you can say that four rows will take 2X5=10 dash marks. If there’s an odd number of rows, just keep the middle row separate

->

So 2X6+3 = 19 dashes.

So you have 375 -300 = 77 rows, the first one has 2 stitches past 299 and the last has 75X2=150 stitches. So we have 74 rows that we want to split and rotate, and each row of the complete square will have 150+2=152 stitches, but only half the rows (74/2=37). So we’ll have 37X152=5624 stitches in the square. Then we add the middle row that we ignored since there were an odd number. It has 38X2=76 stitches.

So you’ll have a total of:

5624 + 76 + (299 X 77)
= 5700 + 23023
= 28723 stitches

Which would take:

28723 / 299
= 96.1 skeins

Assuming I didn’t goof somewhere.

I always hated word problems, too. Papa Tigs was breaking it down into something like the average stitches of the 9-299 st rows is 145 and there are 145 rows getting to 299 sts, and then from 299-375 the average stitches is 337 sts and there’s 38 rows. So if I got that right, I think that means there’s 21,025 sts in the first 299 rows and 12,806 sts in the last 76 rows, which means I’ll need 60% as much yarn to complete the last chunk as the first chunk. Which means…I don’t have enough yarn. Anyway you figure it.

Grrr.

LiLi, the problem with comparing the exercise of singing with the exercise of walking is they exercise different parts of the body. And since **rosie ** is also going to be a member of the Bionic Knee Club this year, presumably her knees like walking about as much as my bad knee does. Which is to say not at all. :frowning:

Ack, Sage Rat, and I thought Papa Tigs’ explanation was confusing!

Yeah, I have had two pissy days in a row now, and I don’t need a haunted computer to compound my issues! Oh, and MGB I must be really dense this evening, as the only Sonny and Cher song that comes to mind is The Beat Goes On which aptly describes the pounding in my brain, but not the triple post. aack!

FCM I am having a situation which makes little Scruffy Butt look like a good girl. Jewel is on The List. (yeah, I have one too, and it’s best to not get on it) She has come into season, so I tried crating her at night, because the AKC is real picky about girls in season being exposed to more than one intact male, and rightly so. I was keeping her with me all during the day into the evening, and she has a nice big open wire crate, covered with a blanket to keep out the drafts and let her den. Nice comfy bedding, plus her own special sleeping bag (a baby bunting) and I left the front uncovered so she could see me and anything that was going on (because she is Miss Nosey) and for the past two days as soon as I have gotten up to go tinkle she has jumped up and tinkled on my side of the bed. Two consecutive days of washing all the bedding and steam cleaning the mattress. Now she is baby gated in the kitchen, and she is very unhappy about it, but too bad.

I worked on a boat doing longline gear for halibut. During the baiting up time I was, yes, the Master Baiter. The man I eventually married (skiffman) thought it was hilarious, and got a lot of mileage out of it on the dock. Men in Alaska, where the odds are good but the goods are odd.

I’ll get better photos of the kitties, Kazz as well, last night I was just playing with my new toy. Oh, and the kitties, they are not even a year old yet, I am afraid Bo might really be a Sasquatch. And it’s Jack with the stache, I’ll get a better photo of his fuzzy face, too.
Okay, here are a few of the Pommies:

Higates Dark Chocolate Fondue aka Fawn

Cash (I got him the month after Johnny Cash died.)

Satine getting snuggled by skiffman

Satine telling Cash to back off while she’s getting snuggles

Satine on guard against any snuggle stealers

Mojo’s Misty Morning Mischa, my first Pom

I’m gonna try to post this only once, no promises though.

Darn it. I was all set for some really good cheese grits. What’s your recipe? The ones I’ve tried haven’t worked so well. At least I didn’t use peppermint cream chocolate cheese in my grits. It would not go well with garlic.

My friend has Opus dressed like Boy George. No Bill the Cat, though.

I have to go snuggle a bunny.

Back from work. I am having some tuna curry and beerverages, then sleep since I have to be at work at 6 tomorrow.

MBG, that isn’t a mob union, is it? I’d hate for you to be whistling Jimmy Hoffa’s favorite tune: “I wish I was an Oscar Meyer wiener!”

swampy, I am sure ACBG is very naughty and need a spanking.[sub][sub][sub][sub] and then the oral sex![/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

kai, Bo looks like he could eat a bear(N.O.S) Satine reminds me of Cuddles, the neighbor’s pom and one of Maggie’s many boyfriends.

Jahdra, cite?

FCM, it will be Friday in 48 minutes.

kai - the poms are cute - but Skiffman is a real honey! (hubba, hubba!)

Pictures? You want pictures ? I’ll give you pictures! I’ve been knitting for about a year and a half, and consider myself an advanced beginner. I haven’t been crocheting nearly as long, and I’m much better at it. But knitting produces the wonderful fabric, so I’m trying to stick with it.

Sorry, doggio, no cite for the other. Oh, ok, here.

The Poms are cute, kai! (Oh, and kai? I think I posted the same post 5 or 6 times on Sunday. Great minds, and all that. )

Sock knitting class was pure torture. I hate knitting in front of an instructor, it makes me nervous. I felt like a complete idiot. My shoulders are really, really tense. Now I need a massage. However, I’m donating blood tomorrow, so no massage for me. I’m going to eat a really, really big breakfast, so hopefully, I won’t faint afterwards. I’ve planned to spend an hour there, just in case.
