I’ve been to London twice. Both were weekend trips. On the first one I visited many museums and such. I was particularly overhwelmed by the sheer size of the Science museum. Other than the science, natural history, and imperial war museums, I don’t have much memory of the visit.
On the second trip a memorable experience was aproaching a tube station and then the train stopping (and all the lights going off) because of a bomb scare in the station.
On returning home I saw on the news about a bin outside the station which may or may not have contained the bomb (can’t remember if it did or didn’t)
I’d like to visit again as an adult, able to see it from more experienced eyes.
I’ve had some great times visiting my sister in Washington DC. I always see the Smithsonian museums, which I love. One night we saw Bauhaus during their reunion tour, who were fantastic.
Well, I grew up just outside my native country’s capital, and of the three other countries I’ve lived in, I lived in the capital cities of all of them.
Funnily enough though, I never thought about it before this thread.
I was born in our capital (Sibley Memorial Hospital) and grew up about 15 minutes north of D.C., in Maryland. We just went up to visit last weekend and I felt like I was home. It’s the only place I think I’ll ever feel that way about.
Incidentally, until moving to the place I live now, I’ve only ever lived in or very nearby capital cities: D.C.; then Salt Lake City, Utah; then Raleigh, North Carolina.
I’ve been to Washington, DC
I’ve been to my own state capital of Sacramento
And to boot, I’ve been to:
Montpelier, VT
Boston, MA
Hartford, CT
Providence, RI
Albany, NY
Harrisburg, PA
Richmond, VA
Atlanta, GA
Lansing, MI
St. Paul, MN
Springfield, IL
Denver, CO
Santa Fe, NM
Honolulu, HI
and in Canada
Victoria, BC
Edmonton, Alberta
Toronto, Ontario
Quebec, PQ
Charlottetown, PEI
Halifax, Nova Scotia
And worlwide:
London
Bonn (it was still the capital then does that count?)
Amsterdam
Brussels
Luxembourg
Oslo
Helsinki
Copenhagen
Stockholm
Tallinn
Tokyo
I have never been to Berlin, my national capital and I am not particularily interested. Back when Bonn was the seat of government, I went through it by train several times, does that count?
Now I live i the state capital of the famous and once separate but french-controlled Saarland.
I live in my state capital. My parents live in their state capital. My brother moved from a suburb of one state capital to a suburb of another. We’re a capital family.
I’ve been to DC once, in 1993 for the march on Washington for LGB rights and pride. Loved the Metro.
I’ve been to Nashville, TN a number of times, currently live in Lincoln, NE and have been to a few other state capitals (Atlanta, Springfield, Des Moines, maybe Harrisburg but I can’t remember for certain) but have never been in Washington D.C.
Have I ever been to my capital? Hell’s Bells I have! I was actually born in Washington D.C. I have also been to the state capital of every state I’ve ever lived in.
When I lived in Canada, I lived for years in Toronto, the capital of Ontario, although I never made it to Ottawa. On a hitchhiking trip out west, I passed through Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Regina, Saskatchewan (do those count?).
Now I live in the capital city of Florida, but the only other place in the country I’ve been is to Los Angeles, which is not the capital of California.
When I was 14, I spent a three days in Washington D.C. with my parents. We went to the Smithsonian without spending nearly enough time there for my taste, and we saw a Fourth of July fireworks display at the Capitol, among other things. We had two ticket to the White House tour, so my dad slipped in.
I live in my state’s capitol, but I visited it a few times before I moved here and toured the capitol building on one visit.
When I was 19 I was working at BP in the summer. I got a call at work from my friends saying they wanted to do a road trip. I told them I didn’t get off until 6:00, and they said “No problem”. We headed for D.C. from Columbus, Ohio at about 6:15 with nothing but a few bucks, and a “D.C. or Bust” sign in the window.
We got there at about midnight and stayed until about 3 in the morning. We walked and drove as fast as we could to see all of the sights in that amount of time. Took our pictures all over the place, and even squeezed in a trip to the Hard Rock Cafe. We then turned around and went right back home. Greatest road trip of my life!
I’ve never visited D.C.; when I lived in the UK I was in London all the time. I’ve been to Florida’s capital, Tallahassee, and there’s nothing to report
Visited a dozen or so other state capitals, and probably twenty other national capitals.
I’ve never been to Washington, D.C. but I could see the Washington Monument all covered in scaffolding while driving across some bridge named after a president on our way to Jersey. I’d like to go someday though.
I live in my state’s capital (Springfield, IL), and I’ve been to a handful of others. I’ve also been to Washington, DC exactly once. Saw all the major sites, yada yada yada.
