Supplementary question - has anyone been to the capital city of another country without visiting their own capital?
Being Welsh I count Cardiff as my capital however technically it’s London (UK), so in that case untill about the age of 16 I had never been to my country’s capital.
I had been to Paris, Copenhagen, Vienna, Luxembourg, Vaduz and Stockholm before that time.
Unfortunately I’m 22 now and work in London so this claim no longer stands.
Without a doubt. I was there on the coldest weekend they’d had in about 30 years. It was right around 0˚F. (I lived in Southern California at the time.) I was having such an interesting experience, I didn’t even notice the cold.
I was there for 4 days total, but only got to the Mall 2 days. My then, husband made me visit with his whole fam damnly.
I live in Austin, the capitol of TX, so yeah…I’ve been there. I’ve also been to the capitol building several times, just to make it official.
When living in Pittsburgh, my family visited Philidelphia, and we spent about one day in Baton Rogue while living in Louisiana, but mainly just to visit the water park there.
I’ve been to London and Tokyo, although I haven’t lived in either local. But still, it was great to see them.
Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania, not Philadelphia…
Live in my state’s capital (Richmond, VA) and take trips to DC at least once a month.
DC (and NoVA in general) is a very nice place, I’m glad it’s just an hour away.
I live in my states capital. Can see the capital building itself at several points on drive to work. I was in Washington DC quite when I was a young teen. The Smithsonian was interesting but I think I would have be better equiped to truely appreciatte the wonder it is now. The single site that really took me aback was the Vietnam Memorial. When we visited the wall it was a bright, sunny day but it seemed a bit gloomy around the wall. It is a simple and moving site.
I’ve been to Washington DC, when I was about 8. It was ok.
I’ve been to Albany, NY, and was entirely unimpressed.
The most impressive capital I’ve been to was Tokyo.
State Capitals:
Denver
Tallahassee (I’m from Florida)
Atlanta
Santa Fe
Nashville
Salt Lake City
Baton Rouge (I live here now)
Washington DC
World Capitals:
Vienna
Brussels
Prague
London
Paris
Berlin
Rome
Amsterdam
Warsaw
Edinburgh
Nassau
Canberra
…many multiple times. I’m not trying to brag, but that’s pretty impressive for a 23 year old.
“World capitals” I was most impressed with include Paris (the metro rocks), London (because of the sheer chaos), Amsterdam (beautiful… the people, the city, the pot… amazing), Prague, Rome, Berlin, and Edinburgh… well, that’s nearly all of them I’ve seen, isn’t it?
Logan.
When I lived in the States it was in a suburb of Washington, D.C. so I have been there. When I lived in Germany I visited Bonn (which was the capital of the “Bundesrepublik Deutschland” at that time) several times. I also visited Berlin, but it was still a divided city and not the capital at that time. Now living here in the Netherlands, I have been to both Amsterdam (considered the official capital) and Den Haag (the seat of the government, and can thus also be considered the capital).
Other world capitals I have been to include:
Paris (for a week, and I was kind of disappointed)
Prague (most beautiful city in Europe in my opinion)
Vienna (city most in need of psychotherapy, IMHO)
London (several times. in second place after Prague, for favourite cities in Europe. It would be even nicer if it wasn’t so damned expensive)
Brasilia (if you consider fourty-five minutes in a plane on the tarmac a visit)
Brussels (blaaah. I prefer Antwerpen or Brugge)
I live in my country capitol, Washington DC. In fact, I’m a hop, skip, and a jump away from the White House.
I lived in Austin, the state capitol of Texas, as well.
And pardon me for forgetting the difference between “capital” and “capitol.” I know that “capital” has to do with economics and sayings like “That’s a capital idea!” “Capitol” always meant for me the building, so I used it here as well.
Who knows?
I’ve been to DC a handful of times, but never long enough to spend as much time at the Smithsonian museums as I’d like to. The monuments you can do in less than a day, and aside from architecture most aren’t terribly interesting. I keep meaning to spend more time at a time down there, like four or five full days, but never get around to it.
I’ve been to Columbus, Ohio, twice (once for COSI when I was in grade school). I see no reason to drive 3/4 of the way across my current home state to go to Harrisburg. From what I’ve heard it’s not much more than an out-of-the-way pit stop on the way to Philadelphia.
I’ve been to my nation’s capital Washington D.C. a few times. Not really my type of place. Seems to be endless suburbs in search of a downtown which there really is none in the terms of tall skyscapers. Guess when it comes to big metro areas, I’m a tall building kinda person.
The only other national capital I’ve been to is:
Nassua, Bahamas.
State Capitals I’ve been to:
Tallahassee ( I live here and see the Capitol almost everyday.)
Atlanta
Montgomery
Nashville
Columbia
Raleigh
Richmond
Harrisburg
Charleston
Albany
Montpelier
Augusta
Boston
Providence
Hartford
Columbus
Indianapolis
Phoenix
Sacramento
