If I’m overdue for barbering and need to look neat in a hurry, I blade-shave my neck stubble in a mirror, then trim sideburns and around the ears with the popup tool on my Braun shaver. It gets me by, although I’ve been known to razor-burn my neck a little.
I’ve been cutting my own hair for about 10 years now. I actually use a beard trimmer. Guard flush with the blade for the back and sides; #1 for most of the rest, except longer right in front, where I might also use a pair of scissors just a bit (the length here depends on my mood). If I leave the front a little longer than usual I’ll also use thinning shears (my hair is course and grows thick as a haystack).
I do all this standing in front of the mirror. I can do the back by feel, although I do get my wife to shave the back of my neck every so often.
Many times…usually between the 2nd and 3rd margarita.
I actually used to do a pretty good job of it but these days, I only trim the bangs.
I always cut my own hair, long, short, layered, not layered.
I’m always unhappy when I get it done in a salon, and I took Beauty Culture, so there’s no reason that I would spend $80 for a hair cut that I’m not going to like when I can do it myself at home.
I do (and in fact just did, a week or two ago). Back when I went someplace to have it done, I always just asked for 1/4 inch, all over (my billiard-ball dad says, "That’s funny, I asked for the same thing). So the professional would just put the 1/4 inch attachment on the clipper, and run it all over. Eventually it dawned on me that this required no skill at all, and short of the one idiot who didn’t know the difference between 1/4 and 1/8, it’s darn near impossible to screw up. And the cost of the clipper is only about twice the cost of a professional haircut, so it pays for itself quickly.
Although in fairness, I will say that I did manage to screw it up once, and had to take it all off to fix it. I didn’t look too bad bald, I thought, but it’d be too much work to maintain it, so I’m back to 1/4 inch.
I tried to trim my hair once. It wound up being the first time I shaved my head. Kept that up for a while, but it was too much trouble. So now I just keep to my regimen of washing and brushing my hair and that’s it. No trimming, no barbers, no nothing.
I cut my own bangs once, when I was in 5th grade. Haven’t touched scissors since.
Well, I have, but I keep them as far away from my hair as I can. shudder
So, imagine my horror when my new boyfriend asked me to help cut his hair. It was awful; I just wanted to run and hide and pretend I hadn’t/couldn’t hear him.
Anyway, eventually he managed to convince me. “You’re just going to trim the back. It’ll be ok. It’s not that hard. You won’t mess it up” etc. And so I finally helped. And he was right, it was easy. He cuts everything he can see and then I get the parts he can’t and it all works out fine every time.
So far.
My brother did the same thing once. He said he took off the comb to clean it and neglected to put it back on before applying the clippers to his head again. Shaved a bald patch right on the side of his head.
I actually heard it when it happened. I was in the next room and he was in the bathroom, so I heard zzzzzzzzzzzzzz for a while, and then zzzzzzzz. “FUCK.”
I knew right away what had happened, and nearly wet myself laughing. I thought he’d kill me when he came out, but luckily he understood that it really was far too funny to expect me to control myself.
My son cut the front of his hair when he was about 4. When I asked him why he did it, he said it was so I could see his beautiful eyes.
Shucks…I get misty just thinking about that…
Ahhh, the patented NurseCarmen six-pack haircut. I’ve been doing it for at least ten years now. It looks pretty shitty right now, I had the sweatshirt hood up, and I’m due for another six pack. I used to give myself mohawks in high school, so I go crazy now if the sides of my head get hair too long. The beauty of the PNCSPHC is that if I screw up, I can go shorter. If I do marginally okay, it looks fine in a week. I’ve save a lot of money over the years.
Yes I do, but God it’s a hassle! First I have to comb out the tangles, then a light wash with Alterna Caviar Shampoo, then an organic jojoba hot oil conditioner to make everything “right” before cutting. Next the flowbee is brought into play. It’s a lot of work but the results speak for themselves!
I had a friend with really pretty, straight long blond hair. She cut it herself: she’d divide it into two pigtails, braid them, and trim off the ends. It looked quite good. So one day I took my (thick, wavy) hair, divided it into pigtails, braided them, and trimmed off the ends.
It looked awful. Uneven and jagged, with this one big hole in the back; I’m not sure how I managed that. I went to the stylist to have it fixed up and she said, “Oh dear. You did this yourself, didn’t you?” Apparently my hair has several cowlicks and unpredictable waves, and does not lend itself to even self-trimming.
So no.
(P.S. We’ve got several hot guys in this thread, you notice?)
I always finish off after getting a cheap haircut.
My closest and cheapest barber is from Hong Kong, and he likes to put a hard edged between the top and the sides, which are cut with electric clippers.
I have to get rid of that edge to avoid the “bowl cut” look.
I’d completely forgotten my story until I read your post, Dung Beetle!
I was three years old, and it was the night before picture day at my preschool. My sister and I had already gone to bed when my mom got home from work. Mom went into the bathroom, then immediately came out to talk to Dad.
Mom: Who’s hair is in the toilet?
Dad: Huh? What are you talking about?
Sometime earlier that evening I’d decided that I needed a new haircut for my school pictures. I have no memory of this, but apparently I found a pair of scissors, headed for the bathroom and started clipping away. Dad put me to bed and didn’t even notice that my waist-length hair had suddenly become chin-length and extremely choppy.
Mom says she cried when she saw me. I think she’s still a little mad at my dad to this day.
I do it every-other-haircut. I get a haircut, then a week or two later I use clippers to trim with to extend the look. Works great and I only have to go to the barber about once a month. Let them do the hard work getting it all correct, then keep it that way an extra week or two.
