My daughter applied to City Year last November. She was told that because of the volume of applications they didn’t get to hers and they asked if she wanted to be Deferred to the next application period or transferred to another City Year location. She chose deferrment.
Then she never heard anything else. I encouraged her to follow up but I’m not sure that she did.
Today she got a message from someone at City Year saying they still had positions open and would like to consider her if she was still interested but that she had to call her back today as the decision was being made tomorrow.
Daughter listened to the message and then, like any Sidekick wielding post-teenager she deleted the message without listening to the phone number thinking, I’ll get the number from caller ID.
The number on caller ID, of course is the main number for City Year, not the direct line to the individual who called her. No problem, you say, just ask for that person. Well, she would do that if she could remember the name but in her excitement about being called she “didn’t even listen to that”. :smack:
So, she’s working at summer camp where cell phone use is very restricted. She only has the main number to call and can’t get anything but voice mail.
I’m afraid for her. I’m afraid that one careless press of the delete button in her haste and excitement is going to cost her this position which she really, really wants.
Of course she’s left messages. Tried e-mailing the recruiter who interviewed her back in November but the e-mail came back so that person is most likely no longer there. She called the number she had for that person only to get a message asking her to call the person for whom she’s already left a message.
Yes, I have done something that, shortly afterward, I thought I probably shouldn’t have done. Turns out, I REALLY shouldn’t have done it – changed the course of my life.
See, the trouble with camp is that they have fairly strict rules about cell phone use among the counselors. She’s not allowed to use the phone when she’s with her campers. Period. She has a couple of hours of off time each day and she can sneak away during mealtimes but otherwise, no cell.
But…I have news!
The lady called back ::insert huge sigh of relief:: and left another message to call her as soon as possible. My daughter called and once again got voice mail but at least this time she knows the lady’s name and direct phone #.
I told her that if she doesn’t hear anything she should call and leave another message explaining that her phone use is limited due to her work situation and asking for a time to call back when the woman would be available.
The thing that’s working in her favor right now is the the City Year position is in San Jose, CA and she’s in NY so they’re 3 hours behind which makes it slightly more convenient to catch up with the woman who said she’ be there until 4:30 pacific time. The counselors have all headed to a local mall for the evening so she’ll be able to make multiple attempts to call back while they’re out.
I’m on pins and needles! This is my baby we’re talking about! She’ll be gone all summer and then she’ll turn around and leave for 9 months in CA. I may have to redecorate her bedroom while she’s gone. Really, though, I’m starting to feel this empty nest thing. I miss her when she’s gone and worry a bit too, though she’s smart and resourceful and can handle herself in any situation. She still calls me for advice about every little thing which is nice. Guess I still know a thing or two. Oh, hell, I’m getting all misty and she hasn’t even gotten the job yet.
The good thing is that my niece is going to college in San Fancisco so she won’t be completely without familial support in CA.
Her dad (a fifth generation florida cracker who’s never lived more than a few miles from where he was born) doesn’t really like the idea of her being so far away.
I got married when I was her age (she’s 20, almost 21). I’m encouraging her to do and see all she can while she’s young and unattached. Yeah, maybe that’s me trying to undo my misspent youth but I’d love to see her spread her wings beyond central florida which is a whole lotta not much.
Thank you Irreverant Tone I was wondering if anyone cared
