I’ve noticed a lot of roads in my county have people’s names (mostly first names) and while I’ve never seen my name, there is one near here with my mom’s name (Loretta Drive.)
My last name shows up on a lot of roads, but it’s a cardinal direction, so…
A long time ago we were driving through Delaware, Ohio while returning from vacation. We were about to cross a street called Catherine Street. I turned to our daughter Catherine and said, “Hey, look! That street is called Catherine Street!” The very next street we came across was Elizabeth Street. I turned to our daughter Elizabeth and said, “Hey, look! That street is called Elizabeth Street!” Both were thrilled, of course.
There’s a road with my last name that’s maybe 10 miles from where my family lived in PA. It’s not really a common name. I’m sure there’s one with my first name somewhere. Around here there are a number of streets named after soldiers who died in Vietnam. These are there full names and could be living people in the area with the same full name, possibly relatives.
I’m Filipino-Russian with a Filipino last name. It’s a little tricky to spell, and to pronounce. When I was kid and the family traveled to there I was surprised to find a major avenue in Manila with our last name. It turns out that back there it’s a fairly common name. Surprise, surprise.
My first name has a unique spelling so I’ve never seen a road with my full treatment for a name. However, my name has a very common diminutive and I’ve seen a few of those around.
As for my last name (also uncommon), my ancestors happened to be the first family to settle a particular part of south Wisconsin and for that reason gained naming rights to the local access road. When my dad was visiting the family farm in the 1970s he stole the road sign, and I still have it today.
There’s a 3-way intersection in my neighborhood with my mom’s name in all 3 directions. Mary Dr. North, Mary Dr. South and Mary Dr. West. I have a picture of her standing under the signs.
My last name is pretty common, and there is in the neighboring town a thoroughfare by that name. My brother prised off a sign on it to adorn his dorm room in college.
(My last name is not very common and is of German descent)
Was on a trip years back with friends in Paris. We were out somewhere for the evening and were all headed back to the hotel. We got on the Metro which was jam packed and everyone got separated. None of us spoke French but it was no big deal since we figured everyone would eventually find their way back.
As the stations went by and the train slowly cleared out, from what I could tell this line eventually looped back to where I wanted to be. Before I knew it I was the very last person on the train from my viewpoint. The metro then got to a station and stopped briefly. Looking out the station was completely abandoned and run down which was very eerie especially being alone. Then, there on the wall of the station where they put the station name is my last name in full capital block letters. Creeped me the hell out and there was no way I was stepping off that train. As if I had died and this was where I was supposed to get off.
Eventually made it back and later found out it was one of many “ghost stations” on the Paris Metro that just happened to have my last name.
Oddly enough, no. And it’s a super common name, Jessica. But maybe not classic enough for streets? I’m sure it exists just not here. There are a lot of number streets around here anyway.
There’s a town in Ohio with my last name. Lots of family vacation pictures with the sign for it. Exciting!
Yup. There’s a Shannon Road in Salem, New Hampshire, and I drive by it frequently when I’m visiting my best friend.
There’s apparently a street with my last name too, in a town across state that I’ve not only never been to but never even heard about until googling it just now.
There’s a street with my first name, three blocks away from the house where I grew up. But, then again, my first name was the #1 male baby name through most of the 1960s, and so, I’d be shocked if there weren’t a lot of streets with that name.
I’ve never seen a street with my last name, but I have a very uncommon last name. Google Maps tells me that there is such a street in rural southeastern Ontario, southwest of the city of London.
Since I live in a big city, my first, middle and last names are represented - two Roads, one Drive - but I’ve never driven on them. When I was house hunting, I looked at one on Aurora Circle. And I live on a street that has the same name as my sister-in-law.
I’ve seen a couple of streets in my travels over the years with my not-uncommon first name, but none locally.
In the Ohio county where I grew up, for a decade or so there was a small rural road bearing both another family’s last name and ours; a few years ago the township put up a new sign just with the other family’s name, the bastards.
There are towns bearing our family’s name in the original French (quite a few more vowels than in our longstanding anglicized spelling) in both France and Canada; I have not been to either.
I have driven past, but not down, streets with my surname. Before posting this I went to Google maps and typed in my surname and suburb and there is a matching street and suburb combination in another state. The Power of Coincidence strikes again.
