I just did a search of our county’s property records, and apparently there’s a street with my name in one of the less desirable areas, which explains why I’ve never seen it… ![]()
I saw a road with my last name in Peters Creek, Alaska. Very odd, as it’s not a common name, and while there is a tenuous connection with my family to that area, it’s not like we actually lived there.
My last name is uncommon, but it’s the name of a major street in the center of Paris, and every time one my family members happens to visit the City of Lights, we feel obligated to have our picture taken under an “Avenue de [Lastname]” street sign.
My grandfather took me to one when I was about 10 years old. In “Goodwill Hunting”, Matt Damon passes right by it when he’s on the Boston Subway. I saw a 2nd one while taking a back road around a traffic tie up. My granddaughter just sent me a picture of one that she happened to see on her way to work one day. It’s not a common name. There is only one town in the USA with that name (in Louisiana).
There’s a city in Utah that carries my last name. In 1970 we were actually through it on vacation and we took some super 8 video of my father walking into the bar that carried the city’s name.
Same here re: Scottish town, although it’s barely even a village. I’ve researched my family tree back to the early 1700’s to within a few miles of it. I expect many surnames which were based on a location will have similar diaspora stories.
There was a scientist with my surname who became famous enough to have plenty of things named after him, so not surprised to find at least six Streets and four Roads with ‘my’ name dotted around the country. Plus a Surname Park about six miles from home. Should really visit that, I suppose.
More surprised to find three Firstname Roads and two Firstname Avenues in my home city - it’s not a particularly common name.
Anyone who knows me off board knows that I have a picture of a street sign with my first name that I found overseas.
I’ve seen Robert Drive in the Cleveland area, where I grew up. I’ve never seen a street with my last name, but Google tells me there’s a “Sternvogel” Drive in Wheatfield, Indiana, about 55 miles north of where I live now.
My first name is a “classic” name with two common spellings, and I’ve seen streets with either spelling. As for my last name, not locally, but my brother lived in another city for a while and said there was a street, park, and elementary school with our not-common surname. He did a little investigating, and while he found no relation, this family had owned a lot of land and sold it to that city when it expanded.
