Once, at the grocery store where I work, I was talking with one customer about a cooking magazine with a rather high price. The person she was with commented something about most of the magazine probably being advertising. I figured, based on the price, that there was no advertising. She looked through, and that was correct. I said to her, “There’s your answer, fishbulb!” I realized only after I said it that she probably would not get the reference and see it as an insult (which it is, actually), but her friend was talking at the same time and didn’t hear me. (For those who don’t recognize the line, it is from a memorable Simpsons episode where Homer is puzzled as to why a Japanese detergent mascot looks exactly like him. Bart says the line to Homer after it is discovered that the logo is a combination of the logos of the two parent companies- a light bulb and a fish.)
I also once overhear a customer say something was “inconcievable,” to which I had to reply to with the famous line from The Princess Bride, even though he only said it once: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
