Channel surfing yesterday, my sister & I came across this program discussing femal sexual disfunction and the strides that have been made in understanding and treating it. One woman the show talked to had a hysterectomy (sp?). She suffered a loss in the ability to orgasm, IIRC. Anyway, one of the meds she was taking was testosterone, IIRC, and she remarked that if men feel the way that drug made her feel, then she can forgive men for being total pigs. Evidently she experienced a state of being horny that was intense beyone anything she was familiar with.
Now it is not for prurient motivations that I am remarking on this; rather, it is nice to think that the bad-mouthing men receive for being such “pigs” may actually arrive from a real physiological misunderstanding. (For the record: I don’t bad-mouth women for being “on the rag”, so don’t give me any of that good for the goose crap.)

Seriously, js, through the wisdom of years I have learned that men are hard-wired for sex. It’s ok. Really. Just as long as guys understand that women aren’t like that.
I’ve wondered for YEARS when what js posted would become general knowledge, and now, on the SDMB, it looks like it has. Testosterone is the only ‘real’ aphrodisiac, but unless you like your women with new moustaches and beards, taking it over a period of months is inadvisable, and from my viewpoint, inadvisable at any time. But it WILL work.
Estratest is a prescription medication, a combination of estrogen and testosterone to be taken by peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women. The theory goes that when the ovaries stop producing estrogen, they also stop making testosterone too. This pill replaces it.
Topical testosterones have also become popular for women.
Attention must be paid to dosage however, or masculinization may take place, with increased facial hair, enlargement of the clitoris, and deeper voice resulting. Along with increased libido.
It is not a cure-all. If libido is depressed for other reasons than insufficient androgen, testosterone won’t do much to improve things.
Also, testosterone is a normal part of a healthy woman’s hormone spectrum. All women should have some testosterone circulating in their system. Just at levels which don’t cause masculinization.
I’ve been seeing TV ads for some pill(herbal?) viagra like thing for women, I’m kinda hoping that this is something that works and that I can convince my SO to try it.
Right, here’s the scoop, one of my biochemistry lecturers was telling us how Viagra was developed and he goes on to talk about a drug company which had been trying to develop something similar.
The company has 3 monkeys who are used as the last safety test before it goes into people. These monkeys are really old in monkey years, about the equivalent of 70 if they were people. There is a Mr Monkey, his mate, Mrs Monkey and his brother, who i will call Norman.
These monkeys mate for life, and in all the years they’ve been in the company, Norman and Mrs Monkey have never got it on.
Then they give them this drug.
Suddenly the monkeys are insatiable, Mrs Monkey is shagging both Mr Monkey and Norman, and when separated the monkeys all masturbate obsessively.
The scientists are a little disturbed, and decide to take some objective measuremants. It seems that Mrs monkey is having orgasms 10 times more frequently and 10 times stronger than normal.
It is decided that the drug is too powerful to release as it is, and needs more tweaking.
FTR my Prof knows this because some of his friends were the scientists, some of whom smuggled the drug home, and they say it works the same on people, they reckon society would crumble if it was ever released!
