Stumbled across it when flipping through the channels the other night, and was surprised that I quite liked it! Far better than most of the other new sitcoms I’ve come across. I hope the network gives it a chance to grow.
Personally, I think Chris Rock is hilarious (though it’s been a while since he had a big hit – his last concert film was good, but not great) and I hope his show does well.
For my money, the only two African-American comedies I watch these days for laughs are Everybody Hates Chris and The Bernie Mac Show. Tichinia Arnold is looooong overdue for some props as an actress and I really like Terry Crews as Chris’ dad, and the rest of the cast is pretty neat, too.
Chapelle is gone (sob!) Wayans show hasn’t ever really been consistently funny and the only reason I tune into Girlfriends and Half-and-Half is for the luscious ta-tas and junk in the trunks.
You know, frankly I’m surprised that one of the major networks didn’t make the show. I can’t even remember what network it IS on – UPN? WB? Rock’s a pretty big celebrity, a famous comedian (once called the funniest guy on earth, IIRC, by one of the newsmagazines), appeals to young people, etc. How did CBS, NBC, ABC and even FOX miss out on it?
Rodgers01. You can’t really miss anything you weren’t invited to.
Ever since UPN and WB debuted, they’ve garnered their audience by being really African-American friendly, much moreso than the other four networks. My guess is that Rock’s production company went straight to the UPN to pitch and develop the show and didn’t even give the others a chance. It was probably a two-fer deal: UPN also picked up and promotes the godawful Love, Inc. with Holly Robinson-Peete and the luscious Reagan Gomez-Preston whcih Rock’s company also produces.
Operation Ripper. I find both Rock and Chapelle extremely appealing comedians. Chris gives cleverer and more ascerbic social commentary / stand-up while Dave is (admittedly) a much better all-around performer and character actor. I can’t stand Chris Rock in the movies.
My husband, daughter, and I are into this show. It’s pretty funny and seems realistic. We laughed out loud at the most recent episode with the baby sitter who was supposed to be watching the three kids and kept leaving because she couldn’t find a sitter for her baby. Nobody I know ever talks about this show though. I hope it does well.
Yeah the show is …all right… It’s funny that this was the most hyped show this season and really isn’t really that big of a hit, while My Name is Earl was underhyped and proved to be the breakout show of the season.
I’ve been singing It’s like a jungle sometimes, I have to wonder how I keep from going under. Heh heh heh heh for the past two days. The sad thing is that I just happened to tune into the show during a Survivor commercial break.
I would love to watch the show, but it conflicts with Survivor. I watched the special broadcast on Tuesday and found myself entertained.
I agree with Askia that the show’s cast is terrific. Tichina Arnold was my favorite character on Martin, and it always bothered me that her character Pam was always a target of Martin’s sometimes-funny, sometimes-not-so-funny jokes (although “Aretha Stanklin” still makes me laugh).
I hate to say it, but I think Girlfriends has jumped the shark. I don’t like the Lynn-as-a-pretend-lesbian storyline, and Maya getting back with her exhusband just seemed to come out of nowhere. Not to mention, I want Joan to re-curlify her hair (natural hair texture is in, people!) But Half-and-Half is still a funny show.
I heard all the hype, watched the first episode, and thought, meh. Not very funny, and the kid who plays the title role doesn’t really have that appeal that the truly great child stars (eg. Gary Coleman) have had. Probably won’t watch again.
This is the show for which I’ll probably finally break down and buy a Tivo.
It’s on Thursdays, and I’m not home on Thursdays, but I can’t remember that it’s going to be on, so I forget to tape it. Then, I can’t remember which channel it’s going to be on. So far, I have twice come home to find something that isn’t “Everybody Hates Chris” on the tape.
But when I do manage to see it, I really like it. And I don’t like Chris Rock that much.
I think the show is funny, and quite charming. And I think the “Chris” actor is wonderful.
And, here’s the odd part, it depresses me. I feel bad about the whole world after I watch an episode. I can’t explain it. I’ve only seen one, so I should watch more. The clips always make me giggle.
Yep that’s the episode I saw; I thought it was hilarious.
You know, based on that episode, the show reminded me a lot of “Malcom in the Middle,” which I think is another underrated show. They seem to have a similar sensibility – kid trying to do good against all the odds in a down on its luck family.
