Everything Beijing '08 Olympics Games

Yellow is 15 in the sin-bin, red is sent off for the rest of the match (and usually at least a one game suspension, and/or not eligible to participate in the rest of the tournament).

very true. on the girl gymnast side it does seem a bit “beauty pagent” ish. there may be a shin kick or toe smash going on as well, when they move to individual events.
and i don’t know… karsh or karch or however you spell his name, brings up the gold medal win a lot, which has them playing the video clip a lot. he may have the same mind set as the other olympic hugging thread seems to have.

if they or the indoor teams win, there just may be “a cover junior’s eyes” malfuntion moment.

ooooh, watching equestrian now.

usa vs canada jump off!!!

it is really quite a bit of fun to say “jump off!” and the commentators are saying it quite a bit as well.

jump off!!!
hey lightray, the david klemperer you linked to up thead any relation to werner?

Depends…the rule allowing spotters for bars in world & Olympic competition was instituted because of this fall by US gymnast Jennifer Sey. A good coach can catch a gymnast or break her fall if it looks unsafe in the air.

rocking chair, no idea about David Klemperer. Volleyball isn’t a sport I follow – at all – outside of Olympics years. When I inexplicably go from “watching sports is dumb” to sports-nut.

God, I love the Olympics.

I’m the same way, don’t feel bad. I could care less about sports most of the time. Something about the Olympics just gets under my skin.

Day 10.

In a fit of insomnia, I watched my first cycling points match last night at 3 am. The velodrome is hypnotic.

Spiny Norman, I wish I had seen that sailing final!

I appear to have missed skeet shooting, so I’ll have to pick it up tonight on the web. Otherwise, I think I’m on pace for my goal of watching one game of every event. I’m still having fun, and, insomnia aside, I’m still reasonably sane.

You really had me here until I read the subsequent posts. I’m not familiar with rugby, although I saw a little of the Rugby World Cup last year and enjoyed the little I saw of it.

I think there are plenty of sports that have “red card” systems, and even those that don’t have literal red cards have the equivalent. A technical foul in basketball is essentially a yellow card. A baseball umpire punching his fist through the air is like showing a red card. What I meant by my statement that there is no equivalent with other sports (although I’m not familiar with every single sport out there and may be wrong ultimately) is that an expulsion is not as damning as it is in soccer. There may be a period where a team is short-handed, but eventually the expelled player is replaced. And often the expelled player is not suspended for the next game.

But every sport is unique in its own way. Having to play a man down (or more) in the sport of soccer just happens to be a part of the rules. Because of this, errors on the part of the ref (who usually get the calls right but are only human after all) can be all the more devastating. (Note: I’m not saying that I think the ref erred in giving Orozco a red. According to the rules, he did what he had to do.)

Argentina 3-0 over Brazil in men’s soccer! I really dislike the Brazilian team.

Speaking of spotting. I have only seen one trampoline competition, but it looks to me like there is but one spotter on one side of the trampoline and the spotter has an extra sofa-sized cushion resting on the edge of the trampoline. It looks all well and good if the trampolinist decides to fall to that side of the trampoline, but what happens if they go off the other? And what is the spotter supposed to do with the extra cushion, heave where he thinks the gymnast will land?

There are four spotters (one per corner) in Olympic competition. You will usually see them slide the mat onto the bed of the trampoline when the athlete can’t make the skill, but is still falling ON the trampoline bed. That way, the trampolinist doesn’t rebound (lessening the injury potential). The spotters themselves will usually break the athlete’s fall if they fall off the tramp bed.

i thought i saw 4 spotters on the trampoline, one on each side. they really do go very high.
the name klemperer just kinda jumped out at me. first thing i thought was col. klink!

jump off!! still having fun with that.

Iceland, population 300 thousand, has just beat Poland, population shitloads more, in the quarter final in the Handball!

We are in the top four! Brouhah!

Nice win by the US women’s soccer team. Now, take care of the Brazilians.

Ought to be an interesting game. Two really good teams up against each other.

My money’s on Brazil

So Usain Bolt just broke the 200 meter world record running into a headwind. Just…wow

Yeah, that was worth staying up for.

and in doing so, breaks what many thought was the most impressive record in track and field, and certainly one that would stand a good 10-20 years longer. Guess not! Incredible pair of performances by the young Jamaican.

damn! And he can still improve quite a bit… just, wow!

Did anyone else watch the US beat Italy in 5 sets in Women’s Volleyball to advance to the medal round?

My new favorite olympian is Lindsey Berg, who came in off the bench and sparked the US in sets 4 and 5. Amazingly, she not only isn’t super tall and athletic looking (like most volleyball players), she’s actually short and, if not quite chubby, extremely normal looking. You’d pass her on the street and not realize that she’s a world class athlete. Which is a nice change.
Today the US men are playing to make the medal round. Then tomorrow is US vs. Brazil for gold in Women’s soccer (the first time more or less ever that the US is a clear underdog).
