My immediate reaction was “Oh, no!” Even if Sam and Bruce are behind the project, I can’t see them improving on the original.

Robocop is getting remade as well. What makes them think they can improve on the original? Oh yeah, CGI, wire-fu, hip hop, Michael Bay-style action editing. Hells yeah!!!
An “Evil Dead” remake will simply go the same route that remakes of “Halloween”, “the Amityville Horror” and “Friday the 13th” went - it will crop up (likely in the latter days of summer when movie going is in a slump and studios dump their turkeys), get a slightly large opening weekend - the ticket buyers being mainly the very same aggrieved horror fans who are now wailing in despair - and then sink into oblivion, never coming close to anything like the success of the original. It will quickly be forgotten, a mere footnote tacked onto the story of the original film.
Off-topic, but I wonder why they’ve never attempted to remake “the Exorcist”?
I’ll see it, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
ETA: On reflection, the fact that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are involved gives me a little hope.
Of course it’s possible to re-make the original Evil Dead and do it better. That’s pretty much what Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn was.
Can yet a third make of it be any good? That, I do not know.
I suppose I’m sort of confused. Why remake The Evil Dead, when that movie was more-or-less supplanted by its far better and more successful sequel? (Ignoring Army of Darkness, which I’m rather meh on.) Even then … there’s definitely a cult following, but I suspect that this series has neither the genre cachet nor the mainstream recognition necessary for success via remake.
Now, give me an original work with the wit and ingenuity of Evil Dead II, I’ll pay double to see it. How likely am I to see that through a remake?
Wasn’t Evil Dead II a remake of Evil Dead?
Diablo “Jennifer’s Body” Cody is writing this? Correction, Diablo “I’m a chick and I wrote a movie where Megan Fox talks about taking it up the ass for 90 minutes, aren’t I cool” Cody is writing this? FUCK!
If Bruce and Sam are that hard up for money I think the world’s Evil Dead fans could take up a collection and come up with a sizable enough sum to bury this thing forever.
My immediate response was “Oh, God. Why. Why…”
Yeah, let’s stick with that.
I always thought of Evil Dead II as a sequel, but I guess it could just as easily be considered a remake. Either way, ED and ED2 are a couple of the best horror comedies ever made.
It’s sort of both. I forget how the story went, but for some reason they ended up prepending an abridged Evil Dead to the beginning of Evil Dead II rather than synopsize the earlier film. Which is why, when you think about it, Evil Dead II doesn’t make sense as a sequel … But oh well, it works just as well anyway.
That’s for sure.
Why in the hell can’t they leave classic movies alone? Remakes never live up to the original. Sam Raimi, Bruce and the others spent years making the Evil Dead. The cast and Sam cleaned up that cabin and built the Evil Dead Set. They filmed awhile and ran out of money. Stopped. Filmed the cellar scenes in Sam’s grandparents farmhouse cellar. Then raised more money to finish and get it edited.
Some slick ass, big budget Hollywood freak movie will never compare to the sweat and heart that went into the original. Independent movies always have a special place in my film library. There’s something special about a project made by young filmmakers without a bunch of suits second guessing every move.
I agree completely. An Evil Dead remake wouldn’t be worthy of being drowned in a bathtub.
For the Exorcist remake idea, here’s a link from 2009. Two years later, and still nothing…
Fourth:
Within the Woods was never meant to be a version of Evil Dead and the plot differs significantly anyway. For those who don’t know, in Within the Woods it’s Bruce Campbell who’s possessed by the Deadite and goes on the killing spree.
