Then, as he was running for re-election in the 2014 municipal elections, he was diagnosed with a particularly ugly and aggressive form of cancer, as outlined towards the end of this thread: Toronto Mayoral Race, 2014
He withdrew from the mayoral race and instead ran for his old seat of city council, winning it handily, while his brother was defeated in the mayoral race.
News reports sound like he’s not doing well with the cancer battle:
Ford was an effective councillor in some ways, largely in that he was very good at assisting constituents with problems they had with the city they could not solve themselves, largely because his wealth and lack of other things to do gave him the time to do it, and he was persistent. He was in fact so good at it that people from other wards would ask him for help. Since such people are disproportionately poor or lower working class that’s one of the reasons he did so well with them when voting time came around, despite being himself born with a silver spoon in his mouth.
That really was all he was ever good at, God rest his soul. Well, that and talk radio, I guess. He was a bad mayor and it was a dreadful idea for him to even try to get the job.
I feel bad for his family and wish cancer on no one but will not pretend he was a good person. He simply was not; he was an abusive bully.
