This is the thread for all the high school Dopers who are suffering through exam season. Classes at our school ended today, I have exams tomorrow and Friday, then I’m done! Whoo!
Anyway, I spent two hours in a Latin review this afternoon, and I’ve been holed up in my room for hours now with a bottle of ephedra, six Red Bulls, a couple low-fat high caffeine bottled coffee drinks called from a brand called “Tremble” and the necessary study materials to prepare for my Latin and Algebra II exams tomorrow. I’m gonna rock em!
Anyways, I got up to get a caffeinated beverage, popped it open and sat down next to the computer to enjoy it. The Straight Crack drew me in, of course, and I figured I might as well post while I drank, and invite others to share their pain before returning to the salt mines.
College/Post-school dopers are welcome to post here to, under one little rule. You may not say “Ha! Wait until you get to college, then you’ll know the meaning of pain!” All of us HS’ers are very aware of this, we are told all the time, and I for one am trying to enjoy a little self-pity along with my medicine flavored carbonated beverage, is that too much to ask?
The Cat Who Walks Alone, a senior and an A/B student, was exempted from all her exams (with parental permission), except for one–the Bowling Final. Yes, that’s right, she had to take a final exam in Bowling. No word yet on her grade, but we told her that if she flunks and has to retake the class, hey, we’ll be right there for her.
Bonzo, a freshman, just finished writing his term paper on Romeo and Juliet that’s due tomorrow. He started it at 9:15 p.m. tonight. “Brinksmanship”, that’s what it’s called. It’s good for him to start learning these important Life Skills early.
La Principessa, a 6th Grader, had Many Big and Worrisome Tests all week on things like “Geography” and “Health”, for which she studied diligently, much to the amusement of her older siblings. “You don’t see US studying,” they hooted.
Good grief! You must be wired like a marionette!
Easy on the caffiene there. If you take that much now, it won’t be as effective when you really need it. Wait until you get to college, then you’ll know the meaning of sleepiness during exams.
I’ve got a couple weeks more until my finals kick in, but good luck on yours! Of course, what am I telling you that for, Lucki?
Bleh. I have to do my Euro thesis paper by Tuesday, which means the alcohol/marijuana-induced haze I planned to spend this weekend in won’t pertain to Monday.
DDG- Sadly, my school does not do exemptions from exams.
Our language program requires that you get above an 80 in a language class to move on to the next level. I could hand in a blank exam tomorrow and still make above an 80. What’s the poing of making me take it? As much as I would love to be exempt from taking it, I have too much pride to actually go in there and do a bad job. ::grumble grumble::
I feel very confident about Algebra II at this point, and I think if I continue on with Latin at this rate I could get in like 5 hours of sleep tonight. Almost a shame for my stockpiled stimulants to go to waste, but of course the joy of sleep would outweigh that shame.
I just finished all of my IB (International Baccalaureate) exams, a day b4 graduation. That was last week. I had exams everyday for two weeks. On some days I had three exams. Keeping me at the college that we tested at for like 6 or 7 hours. I studied really hard for all of my exams. I think I did well enough to get the coveted IB diploma. We had exams in Biology, History, Spanish, English, and Math. The test was over what we’ve learned the past two years in IB. Didn’t cover the things we learned in Pre-IB, thank god. That’s all forgotten. Either way, exams we HELL. I studied soo much, and on days that I had multiple exams, which was actually every day, I crammed between tests. Fun fun fun! I felt you pain. It’s all over for me now though! yippie

I would also like to inform you all that I dont have finals either. <3 Homeschool. Well technically I had a Math final but I had to keep retaking variations on it until I got an A.
O and I just wanted to say, since Lucki mentioned the red bulls and such devices to keep you awake. Never do Yellow Jackets! It worked on keeping me awake, I just couldn’t type, because my heart was beating outside my chest, and I was bouncing all over the place while I was sitting still. It’s crazy stuff. Red bull tastes gross. Mellow Yellow has a better tasting drink “Amp”. That’s good stuff.

P.S. I know all about exam pain. My school has 8 classes. 4 a day. That means 8 exams, twice a year. College has nothing on that. Especially when 7 of the 8 classes are advanced classes.
I am at the end of my year, too, but we get exemptions from certain exams at the end of the year. So, fortunately, I only have to take my physics exam. But that’s not even until June 6, so I’m not thinking about it.
One of the few good things about attending such a poor high school was that we were one of the few schools in the nation with no finals or projects. Nothing. All that mattered was your work for the entire year.
Although that doesn’t mean it was … Well it was easy but it certainly it didn’t mean we couldn’t screw up big time. I mean your grade is what you did all year. Why senior year, days before graduation I found out I had failed English and that I couldn’t graduate and all the crap that went with that horror. I went to my English teacher and begged and groveled and pleaded and she acquiesced. Since I was only failing by a hair’s breadth she let me write a paper to make up the half-point keeping me out. See? Those things occasionally do work. Thank God!
Lucki, I never had those qualms. I did nothing for 2nd semester senior AP physics cause A + F = C. And yet the teacher still liked me, go figure.
Well, I’ve got one exam left - a general paper based on the first three years of my degree  Just had my viva for my research project today - that was scary, and now my parents insist on visiting - tonight. And no, I don’t know what time they’re getting here…aaargh!
Went to bed at 6:30PM yesterday because I was really tired. Woke up at 3:00AM and studied Algebra 2 until 5. I should have payed attention in that class last year. I thought I was going to get an A on my German final but I got a B. I didn’t give much of a shit about my History final since I can’t get an A in the class even if I make a 100, but I will get a C if I get below a 50… I have to read most of Song of Solomon tonight for my literature exam. I probably wouldn’t be in this predicament if I wasn’t so damn lazy :D.
My math teacher will …alter… your final grade if you do well on the final. Which is how my 88 became an A. Whoo! On the other hand, there’s that history final I’ll be lucky to get 2 digits for. Bleh.
Maybe comradegonzo if you had been in class at all this year, you would have been better prepared. That history final was a bitch to take, and it was so fucking long.
I have my precalculus final tomorrow. I also have to finish my portfolio for that class, due tomorrow. Grrrr. I can’t find any applications for conic sections, a crucial part of my portfolio. I can’t afford a low grade on it–I was aiming for an A in that class, but since that’ll never happen, I’m holding out for a B.
I don’t have any other finals. My school has a system of exams (worth 1/5 of your grade) set up, but you’re exempt from exams if you’ve missed no more than two days in the semester. Besides that, you can exempt out of 2 exams if you had at least a 3.5 GPA the previous semester. The math teachers here have a separate final from the exams that no one is exempt from. It is to sigh.
