Exotic foods you've enjoyed :)

When we were kids, Chinese food was exotic to us; we’d never tried it before–and we have always liked it since. (We come from Indiana, presumably a haven for boring food.)
I’ve tried baklava, which was really good. (I’ve had some really bad baklava, too.)
Post here an unusual food you had never tried before–but which you really liked.

Frog legs. Oddly tasty. Buffalo is nice. Love venison. Thats about it.

sushi. Love most of it.
All sorts of cuisines from around the world : India, Greece, Ethopia, Thai, Korean, VietNam, Brazil etc.

Any odd produce in the market, and I’m there.

My son, however, is the king of “I’ll try anything”. He’s dined on rattlesnake, alligator, boar, emu, bison, deer (of course), frog legs, squid, octopus etc.

Fried alligator is quite tasty.

Vietnamese Hot and Sour Soup. Like the baklava, some is great and some is really bad. It’s best if the vinegar is floated on top after it’s in the individual bowls, but a lot of places stir it in early and let it simmer all the scent away.

Japanese Kasugai Peas. Snack stuff: dried peas coated with wasabi (Japanese horseradish). Trust me on this! But not unless you like horseradish.

Kumquats. Somebody asked in another thread a few days ago. Sour citrusy fruit to bite in half and eat skin and all, but watch out for the seeds.

There are probably lots of other things I like that seem exotic to some - I don’t know any more what’s strange …

Venison isn’t exactly an exotic food where I come from. Buffalo is though. I’ve had both. I also ate rattlesnake when I was a kid at some restaraunt in Arizona. They gave me a certificate and everything. Also, bear meat. If you’re looking for exotic meats, try this page:

Some day I’m going to order the alligator.

I usually make it a point to order a dish I’ve never tried when eating Chinese food. I also once ate a whole habanero pepper, don’t know if that counts.

Here is one I can almost guarantee you’ve never tried. I’m from the Tlingit tribe (make it easy on you, kling’-kit) in Southeast Alaska. My grandmas eat a delicacy that they call “stink eggs.” (Can you see what is coming?) What you do, is you take salmon eggs (round pink eggs about the size of peas), and then you bury 'em in the ground and let the ferment. After that you boil 'em up and eat them. Creates a godawful stink throughout the whole house. I tried one, just one, hidden inside a piece of potato. It squeaked around inside mouth until my teeth got a handle on it. Then it burst open releasing quite an, ah, unique flavor. Tasted kind of like seal oil, that is, rendered seal fat.

I’ve also eaten dried salmon dipped in seal oil. Herring eggs, little white cluster of eggs on branches, eaten those. Gumboots, a sort of shellfish that sticks to rocks that you pry off with a knife. I believe the real name is chiton. Tough as a piece of shoe leather, but fairly tasty.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. (I do wonder what rhino would taste like.)

Tripe (cow’s stomach) YUCK
Elk YUMMY
Alligator - good stuff!

Mofo-- I’m sure the spelling is wrong, but did you ever get a chance to try ooligan oil. Real fragrant, rancid(?) fish oil. Defintely a condiment that takes some getting used to. :stuck_out_tongue:

Does octopus count?

Mmmmmmm. Little rubbery, but quite tasty.

Yeah, hooligan oil is like seal oil. They usually eat it with the herring eggs.

Let’s see,
Fish head curry wasn’t bad. Snow fungus was good. I’ve eaten frog legs, taste just like chicken.

Rhambutans
Mangosteens
Durians
Selaks

Pork Floss

Yum, Yum, yum

When living in Alaska for a spell, I had bear and moose–gamey, but not bad.

I’ve had all kinds of sushi (and learned how to make it in class).

Had fried crickets once.

Even had the gumption to eat a McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder once, too.

I tried sushi for the first time this summer and loved it.
Does haggis count as exotic?? It’s actually fine, although the one I tried was a little too spicy for me. But I can’t get enough of vegetarian haggis with “neeps and tatties”.
My husband had fried octopus in an Indonesian restaurant in Holland, tentacles splayed all over the plate. I tried a bite and thought it was all right, if a bit chewy. He loved it.

Jellyfish. It was like eating crunchy cartlidge. Not a lot of flavor…

Bear. It is pretty damn chewy.

Many types of venison…some type of antilope was the most exotic…

I’ve eaten almost every possible ethic food you can think of, and enjoyed most of it.

Without question the greatest cuisine in the world (IMHO)

And you can’t get it here, AT ALL :frowning:

mmmmm, calamari
:: drools like Homer Simpson

My mother and some of her friends occasionally eat sheeps’ heads. Apparently the eyeballs are the tastiest part of the sheep. I can’t bear to eat anything that smiles at me.

tripe (GROSS!)
calamari/squid (Yum)
moose sausage (quite good)
octopus (good)
buffalo (not much different than good lean beef)
frog legs (good and, no they don’t taste like chicken)
