This occured to me as I was buying my beloved paarden rookvlees at a Granville market butcher today. I think the farthest afield I’ve gone in carnivorousness. . . isn’t very far, although I like to think of myself as daring. I’ve had the usual things like ostrich and caribou, semi-forbidden things like horse quite a bit, frog, snake, kangaroo, various horrible squishy things from the ocean, and possibly (unconfirmed) dog and cat (grew up in the middle of the ocean). Anyone ever have koala, or monkey? Spotted owl? Tuatara? Kitten? Pineal gland of a monkey? Parrot sarynx? Human? C’mon-- shock me. Arthropods and echinoderms count, too-- if it’s higher on the food chain than yeast it’s in. Vegans and vegetarians also welcome to insert disgusting or disturbing non-meat items as well (natto? bark?)
I once accidently ordered live razor clams at a sushi place. I had a bite of rattlesnake while touring a survival school. I’ve chewed mule hoof, and tar. I fried up some grasshoppers once.
Well, I might as well be the one to ask; has anybody eaten long pork?
I’ve had rattlesnake on two occasions and it was really good. On other occasions I’ve had raccoon and armadillo cooked on an open fire. Had shark also back when it seemed it was mostly unheard of by most Americans.
Cobra and crocodile. Cobra delicious, crocodile slightly less so.
Bobcat? It was actually pretty good.
I ate witchetty grubs on a trip to Australia. One can eat them raw or cooked IIRC, ours were cooked.
In taste and consistency they were not unlike an egg cooked over easy.
I’ve also had kangaroo and crocodile but I suspect a lot of other people have as well.
Not too weird, but either emu or pigeon would top my list, whichever is stranger.
Grilled baby octopi, consumed whole. There’s a brief ooogy moment of omigod I’m eating a HEAD, but overall, the taste sensation is of yummy chewy seafood in olive oil, with a slight charred note.
Maybe not the strangest animals, but some odd bits of them:
Kangaroo Tail
Shark’s Fin
Testicles from a variety of animals.
After spending most of the past year and a half within spitting distance of the North Pole, I’ve had some interesting culinary experiences. Actually, most of these are pretty tame compared to some of the other stuff in this thread.
Caribou, musk ox, narwhale, bowhead whale, beluga whale, seal, walrus, arctic hare and ptarmigan.
Haven’t had the opportunity to try polar bear yet. I think I might have to give that one a pass.
Half a cockroach, but it wasn´t intentional.
That happened to me once. Happily, it was a small cucaracha (no more than 1/2" stem to stern) and he was well cooked into a slice of delicious pumpkin pie. So I barely blinked, and kept eating.
Does sea urchin count as meat? Disgusting shit. As long as I live, I swear I will never again order something in a foreign country with word ‘assorted’ in the description.
I am so boring. The most exotic I’ve ever gotten is lamb.
I love Uni. To each his own I guess.
I have eaten reindeer, camel hump, duck tounge, whale blubber, ostrich, eel, and duck feet. Most disgusting thing I ever ate was a blood taco.
Sounds like a euphamism for something.
I was just going to say the same thing. I loves me some Uni.
I’ve also had crocodile, which was OK, but really nothing to right home about.
Umm…well my last boyfriend was pretty strange…
Squirrel. Don’t remember liking it much. Large frog legs (taste like chicken). Small frog legs (umm).
