Today’s comic “Bliss” depicts a cat staring at a mousehole, which has a baton-shaped object (mail slot? grab handle?) just to the left of the mousehole. What does it mean? Anyone? (I would have posted a link but could not find the cartoon on line anywhere.)
It looks a bit like a mezuzah.
Although that would seem to make the comic less funny, rather than more so.
Yeah, actually, once the momentary “heh, the mouse is Jewish” thing wears off, I start thinking of Krystallnacht.
Or Maus.
I love the Dope; 5 minutes for someone to find the cartoon and 40 minutes for an answer! You guys are the best. And, I don’t think it’s terribly funny but “Cat = Nazi” is not a big stretch, either…
If you want more opinions on the matter, send the cartoon to this site:
That’s a huge mousehole.
Especially not if the cat’s a Kitler.
IANAJ, but I have Jewish friends with mezuzahs (mezuzi?) and the cartoon definately depicts what they have on their door jambs.
ETA: mezuzot is apparently the plural.
Interestingly, in the image linked by Lobohan, the object is to the right of the mousehole. Could it be a flopped/mirror image you saw?
Sailboat
Like all things in life, that depends which side of the mousehole you’re on.
But… what’s the punchline? A Jewish mouse?
Oh! Glad I wasn’t the only Gentile confused.
On a side note, I want to own the Bliss dog.
I thought it was a coin slot. Put a quarter in, a mouse comes tumbling out!
It’s already there!
It’s Bliss. There is no punchline. That comic is never funny.
Ah, so it’s a slightly more cerebral and better-drawn version of Family Circus. Now I get it.
