Having seen the film twice, here’s my understanding of her backstory:
We are introduced to “Vers” a Kree soldier in Starforce with memory loss.
Vers is found to have had a past on Earth under the name Carol Danvers
Yadda yadda yadda, got some super powers and now she’s Captain Marvel.
What I still don’t get is who the heck is she? Is she Carol Danvers, Earthling? They made it seem like she grew up on Earth and that the Kree called her “Vers” because her dog tag was Zardozed in an explosion.
If she’s really Kree, they why doesn’t Starforce call her by her actual Kree Name that presumably isn’t just a fragment of a dog tag?
She’s an earthling. When she got bitten by the radioactive spaceship and developed powers, Yonn-Rogg kidnapped her. The Supremor decided she would be a useful weapon, and brainwashed her.
She’s is Carol Danvers, Earthling. Jude Law watched her get special powers and decided to take her back to Kree-land and trick her into thinking that she was a Kree super-soldier. He didn’t know her real name.
It was the MCU’s attempt to consolidate 50 years of comic book backstory, involving dozens of different characters, into a 2-hour movie with a few characters.
She was born and raised on Earth, as Carol Danvers. She graduated from the Air Force Academy and became a pilot - specifically, a test pilot. She worked with Dr. Wendy Lawson on a new plane. During a test flight, they were shot down by Kree looking for Lawson and a “light speed engine”. Lawson revealed that she was actually a Kree scientist named Mar-Vell - her blue blood convinced Danvers. Danvers stood off Yon-Rogg, and destroyed the experimental engine, which infused her with the energy of the power source. That power source turned out to be the Tesseract, which had the Space Stone, one of the Infinity stones. Yon-Rogg realized this, and decided not to kill her, but to take her back to Kree, brainwash her, and train her as a soldier, hoping to use her and her power. Eventually, Vers/Danvers regains her memory and defeats the Kree.
My only question is how/when did she get infused with Kree (blue) blood? I’m guessing she needed a transfusion after blowing up the engine, but its not quite clear.
It gets mentioned a little later on* - Yon-Rogg gave her a transfusion at the time you guessed.
*When Yon-Rogg comes to earth towards the end, after Carol recovers her memory. He’s giving her testing questions, and she failed this one - because it was one of the Skrull playing decoy.
I’ll have to watch it again. Somehow I missed whether she was born on Earth or placed there as a child or whatever and the wiki articles were a bit ambiguous.
It hasn’t been clear to me exactly why they gave her a transfusion, replacing earthling red blood with Kree blue blood – you’d think that making such a drastic change in one’s body systems would have a lot more problems than it solved. as far as I can see, the main thing she got out of it was a way to make watchers scratch their heads (“She’s got blue blood!”)
Well, at least she can truly claim to be a Blue Blood now. And do commercials for tampons.
FWIW, they established that Kree blood transfusions had remarkable healing properties on humans way back in the first season of Agents of SHIELD, when they explained how Phil Coulson was still alive after being impaled by Loki in the first Avengers movie.
Don’t forget that, at the same time the Supreme Intelligence brainwashed her, they put a doohickey on her neck that they claimed was the source of her powers, but which was actually suppressing them to a manageable level (manageable for the Kree, that is).
