So, I’m in the toilet, taking a leak when all of a sudden I get this terrible abdominal pain that kind of feels like my insides were being tightened with string somehow.
It was all across my stomach and then stopped after about 10 seconds.
Colicky abdominal pain is occasionally described in terms similar to those you use.
In this situation, the smooth muscles of various portions of the large intestine tighten up in one area, while other segments of the colon may get quite stretched out due to the constriction of other segments.
This is usually a benign phenomenon, but may represent a more serious disorder at times; especially of these symptoms recur frequently.
If symptoms persist, consult your health practitioner.
[hijack] Qadgop, I can’t decide what’s the coolest thing about you - your name, the fact that you’re a doctor and willing to talk about medical issues, or the fact that your daughter Elfbabe (who is adolescent if not adult) seems quite happy to hang out (at least some of the time) at the same message board as her father - a rare feat these days.
Oh, and you also seem to be a nice guy. Amazing.

Aha.
Well although Qadgop knows more about Middle Earth than me, nevertheless I was a member of the Tolkien Society and did get a letter from Professor Tolkien.
Holy crap! I get these pains all the time. It usually occurs late at night, for some reason, and then I will get unGodly pain in my abdomen. The first couple of times I thought it might have been a kindey stone. It is then always followed by me, on the can, in a lot of pain, with “stuff” coming out of me. I think we’ll leave it at that.
Seriously, this happens at least once a month, but I never thought it was any kind of thing, just random pain associated with the…uhhh…“stuff” (I hate the d-word SO much I refuse to type it.)
I’ve had this happen to me a couple of times. It happened after holding it in for way too long then putting too much pressure on my bladder. I always thought it was just a bladder spasm of sorts from straining it so much.
