[nitpick] Rasa in Sanskrit means “Juice, flavour, essence” or one of the 9 categories of aesthetic joy. From Monier-Williams [/nitpick]
That aside - I think Rasa is a wonderful username.

The lead singer of Journey???
My tale begins in the waning days of the BBS empire. I had different “handles” on different boards, often with an animal or astronomical theme: Firebear, Redstar, Silver Dragon. When Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy came out, there was a Star Destroyer called Stormhawk. I thought it sounded cool, so I started using it in preference to the others.
When the Web hit the scene, I discovered that there were a bunch of other Stormhawks out there. I was into heavy metal bands like Danzig at the time, so I went with the pseudo-German spelling (it’s more metal). Now it’s pretty much my username everywhere, and it seems to be unique to me.
Not terribly exciting . . . I dressed as Scarlett O’Hara* for our Y2K NYE costume party (I’m female and I have dark hair, and there ends my resemblance to her), and I was born in 1967. I wanted to be either Scarlett or Katie Scarlett, but those names were taken (bitches never post, either).
*OK, technically I dressed as Carol Burnett playing Starlet O’Hara, complete with green upholstery fabric and curtain rod. A few years ago I sold the costume to a Doper for her daughter to wear for Halloween.
I was originally Xanthippos (a character in a Gene Wolfe novel I particularly enjoyed). My subscription expired (I think it was only a guest shot), and I chose a song title from one of my favorite bands, Son Volt.

Don’t stop believin’.
I’ve been told I have the distinct odor of a Calcutta sewer.
Thanks. I was taking poetic license with my definition.
It is my tribal name. Cate=red, Ayo=hawk. I go by “Hawk” in the real world.
I was/am a huge fan of that famous band you’ve never heard of, the Squirrel Nut Zippers. My nickname since 2nd grade has been JJ and probably 50% of the people who know me IRL know me as JJ.
So, since about 1998, my screen name has been ZipperJJ. It’s unique enough that it’s never taken anywhere I go. So yes if you Google me, that’s me.
Yeep. Just realized the first hit is OKCupid…the real me actually has less hits than the online me!
You’ve done well, then, because I’ve thought of the band every time I’ve run across your username.
My wife and I got “Hot” when it came out and it has remained one of our favorite albums. In fact, had the power not gone out at our wedding reception eight years ago (a story for another thread), we would have danced to “Meant To Be.”
Which tribe, if I may ask?
When I signed up on the Dope I was working in feral cat trap-neuter-release/rescue, which meant socializing and fostering a lot of kittens. I was nicknamed the Catlady by our hockey team, the Columbus Cottonmouths, nicknamed the Snakes. So when I signed up I called myself “Snakescatlady”. A lot of posters made reference to “snake scat” so I asked the lovely and gracious TubaDiva to please change it to “SnakesCatLady”, which she kindly did. No more references to snake scat!
Yes, you may! I am Creek (Mvskoke).
I haven’t explained mine in awhile, so I’ll tell it again.
On the day when I signed up, I had been listening to a song by Canadian humorist/musicians Bowser & Blue, called “A Dyke Named Spike” It goes:
I’m in like with a dyke named Spike
Who needs me like a pike needs a bike…
which is derived from the old saying “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”
I’ve thought of lots of better names since, but I’m known here by this one. However stupid it is, it looks like I’m keeping it. I didn’t know how often it’s turned up on the internet until I looked. AFAIK none of the listings there are for me. There are several pictures on the web of cool scupltures of fish on bicycles, which made me laugh.
I was a quiet kid, good at sports. Because of that, someone gave me the nickname Runsilent. It comes from the excellent submarine movie from 1958, Run Silent, Run Deep, starring Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable.
King of the Yetis.
And all this time I’ve been wondering what happened to dahfisheroo! Now I know.
Regarding freckafree, when I was a kid and talking dolls (ala Chatty Cathy, but NOT Talky Tina!) were all the rage, I had a talking Casper The Friendly Ghost doll. From day one, the phrase, “I’M a FRIENDLY ghost” (spoken in a very singsong voice) was garbled. My sisters and I thought it sounded like he was saying, “I’M a FRECK a free.”
I just like the way it sounds. I use it for all sorts of stuff. It is very frequently misread as freakafree.
Antinor is a character I played for a while on a MUD, I added the 01 for my email and things like that and pretty much use that name everywhere now.
I’ve been pondering changing it, in a thread we had a while back asking people to describe the previous doper someone mentioned they thought I could be a bit caustic at times so I came up with a possible one, CausticEffect. That way it kind of fits with that and adds a little play on words.
Thank you, freckafree, you made my day. I think that’s my first shout out-- at least when people aren’t cursing me, and all of my near relatives.
I have the change in my sig line, and used it for a while, but then I thought it would be obnoxious all the time. I’ll keep doing it for a while, I guess.
