A radio story I heard on this said that the capital conviction came about because he left the scene of the crime. Under these circumstances he was deemed to be aware that his actions were wrong, and thus not insane.
So, remember, folks: if you decide to cut out major organs of your victims, stick around until the cops show up and you’ll have a much better chance of making a successful insanity defence.

Seriously, I think the OP meant that the court was pretty stupid because it ruled that he was sane.
I saw a reference to this event in this thread, but I had no idea what it was referring to.
